Jesse Lingard did an interview with GQ Magazine where he was quoted as saying: “I actually feel more comfortable when I play for England than United. Every game, you’ve got to play with no fear.”

The player quickly responded with a picture of him celebrating a goal for Manchester United with ‘more than comfortable’ written across it.

During an England press conference today, Lingard has elaborated, claiming he was misquoted and that he feels equally as comfortable in both teams.

It’s all misquoted. I’m playing regularly in the England team and I feel comfortable. Jose has given me opportunities to play week in week out at Manchester United and it’s up to me to deliver performances. I’m as comfortable as United as I am with England.

England take on Nigeria in a friendly and manager Gareth Southgate has confirmed that Lingard will start. Phil Jones is missing as his wife is due to give birth. Southgate has insisted that he isn’t choosing between Lingard and Dele Alli though, claiming that they could play in the same team. Make sure you place your bets right on this match and further to come.

I don’t see it as a straight contest between any individual, absolutely they could play together. All of our attacking players have different attributes or strengths. Jesse is a fantastic player at recognising the space, working away from the ball, a great link between midfield and attack.
