They dominated midfield and made us look silly at times. We were chasing shadows and our pressure was nowhere near good enough.

What is worse than the defeat is that no-one from the club is prepared to talk to the journos so the fans can hear their explanation. Vidic left stadium in crutches and the scan will reveal how bad it is but since this season is cursed I think we all know that he will be out for rest of season.
Looks like one hard road to nowhere for the rest of the season.

@Balaji (about SAF)

Ever since the UCL final losses, he's wanted to show Europe his team can play attacking, cavalier football rather than the safe football United's played all along in Europe.

Fergies lack of spending is his own personal vendetta against the transfer market and the moneymen that runs it. That surely must be clear to everyone.

Also, they had acres of space far too often because we weren't quick enough and tenacious enough. Too easily bypassed in midfield. I'm mainly talking about the first half now, because obviously we were on top in the second half. But we didn't play like a good United side play when we are chasing a game even in the second half. Basel got way too much time on the ball and could easily play their way up to the edge of our box far too often for my liking.

Before i do go off though I want to ad what the fuck has happened to our defending of crosses. Evans and Smalling on the 2nd goal was nothing short of pathetic.

@Colbert

That's utter utter bollocks. They couldn't keep hold of the ball, we dominated possession in all areas, we didn't need to press so hard as they were giving us the ball straight back in the first half. We got more possession by giving them the room to play the ball to us. By pressing more in the second half they got behind us a couple of times, which we by and large dealt with.

The result was the only thing wrong tonight, both goals were totally against the run of play. That's all.

Apart from picking the ball out of the net twice and the free kick save De Gea had fuck all to do all game.

This european campaign is a realitycheck. Nowhere near good enough. Fucking crap performance in front of goal. No penetration, no direction, no class, nothing. Cautious and totally shit. Someone please take some responsability up the for FUCKS sake. Feel especially sorry for Nani and Giggs, they deserved the win.

That's a ridiculous theory. We've spent our fair share, but instead of blowing out on a series of established star names like a certain oil-rich but class-poor neighbour, we've invested heavily in young potential. As always SAF will be proved right, especially when the fair play laws come into full swing.

Yes, and Europe showed him the exit door...

SAF says now that the penalty for failing tonight means we play Thursday and Sundays for rest of season starting in Spring. That is something they have to deal with he says. I suspect that means we will play the reserves in Europa League.

Going to have to agree to disagree, I really am. We were miles better all over the park tonight, Shakiri or whatever his name is caused us a couple of problems with his tenacity and movement but otherwise they had nothing on us, whatsoever.

Another night, we could have got 4. They might not have even got a single shot on goal. And you'd have been jumping up and down celebrating our superiority, as would everyone else. Just because we lost, doesn't neccessarily mean we played badly, and we really didn't.

TheLads were pathetic - no drive, no flash, no dash. Maybe next year.

Now it's time to try and claw back into the EPL and, if not, then phase out the older players (like SirRyanGiggs, ThreeLungPark, Patrice Evra and Rio - regardless of how well they played) and bring in the kiddie corps.

Ashley Young was atrocious - again.

At least Dimmy and Antonio Valencia weren't there to make it worse.

KR says:

"Just watching mutv and lou macari does my fuckin head in. He knows nothing about footballers outside of united."

Most tv pundits do my head in. On Sky Sports they were saying Chelsea have nothing and no-one to fear in the draw for the next round, which includes Napoli and 7 times winners Milan. A night to be a bit more humble about the English teams? Not on Sky.

I rest my case by referring to SAF's comments about the transfer market. A personal vendetta it is for sure that goes back to his working class roots in Govan and the values that shaped the man. He has tried his best at not feeding the greedy agents and their players. That is why we never buy top class but instead buy players that he know can do a good job in the collective spirit of the club.
We will never see any Balotelli or the like come and destroy the friendship and spirit that exists within the club. It's just not worth it.

The little I have heard about MUTV is that the channel defends the club to the last blood no matter what and are reluctant to admit that we need new players. It is sad that people that get paid to give expert opinion have not seen or heard of top class players that are out there.
They don't have to say that we should buy them but they should know about them at least. Paddy Crerand is a brilliant man and I love him to bits but sometimes he defends the club so much it just comes across as madness.
I never like people defending things to the point of claiming that the earth is flat just to be right.

I feel there's a lot of "woulda, coulda, shoulda" in your post. I don't buy into that whole whichever team had the ball the most or created most deserves to win. Unless the referee ruins the match (which wasn't the case tonight) the team who fairly (Basel's goals were perfectly decent goals) sticks the ball in the back of the net deserves to win. Like in 03/04 when we played Arsenal in the cup. They battered us, but we held on and won through a brilliantly taken goal by Scholesy. That day we got what we deserved because Arsenal didn't manage to score, but we did. And we got what we deserved tonight, which was nothing. No excuses.

Usually I would have believed there was any hope but we are now in a situation where we rely on old players that pick up injuries and we just have to admit that this is an off season for us.
Plenty of games to be played and United will always try their best to win them all but for me we look like the sides we had in the 80's when on the day or night we could beat anyone on certain days and then fuck up completely when the world expected us to win handsomely.
Have we got any right to complain though if this season is shit when we look back at all we have won?
I think not!

Fibes - We were miles better all over the pitch? We should be! They're an average team. United made them look like Madrid over the 2 games ffs! We played ok tonight, but lacked the cutting edge. Sloppiness, throughout the group stage, has cost us big time. You can point to Fergie tinkering, or injuries, but if we're being honest, just not good enough. Certainly not for a United team. IMO, the injury crisis is the bigger problem, than departing the champions league. Not fussed about the Europa cup. Fergie will probably play the kids anyway. The priority now, should be the league and the FA cup. Spurs have a game in hand on us. If they win it, we drop to third. Thursday night, channel 5? The jokes on us now, lads.

juan - That wasn't his point. You get the feeling on here, that some have been waiting for this to happen. Then they can say, I told you all so? No one is happy with that tonight. This season isn't lost yet. We've got it all to do. We'll see now, who the boss can depend on.

@Wayne- "a couple of bad performances"? we are the worlds most prominent sports brand yet seldom play in accordance to such a label. Between the city thrashing, the crystal palace defeat and bowing out of the cl in an exceptionally weak group when would u suggest a "convenient" time wud be for fans to earn their right to criticise woeful performances and complacency?

Absolute disgrace. We got away with playing with average squad for so long it was going to catch up to us. Our team is purely average, we just need to look into the squad.

GK Lindegard, DDG I like them both so no complains here.
RB Rafael, Fabio, Jones and Smalling injury prone and not consistent. We hadn’t have a standing RB forever.
Rio old and slow
Vidic still grate but had been injured far too often
Evans average
Evra inconsistent.
Park average for a while now.
Giggs old, slow and old again
Carrick inconsistent and no guts. Have been having some good games recently, but still.
Fletch, Andy, Gibson shit
Young, Valencia one dimensional, one trick ponies
Nani good most of the time, but still inconsistent
Chicha great player who chips in with his fare share of goals always.
Welbeck young and inexperienced
Rooney on and off (two months or so)between great and shit
Berba and Owen not important and not good either.

Not sure if I missed someone, but it seems about right. The team is not bad it’s just average. It was completely drained of world class talent. Those that we hoped will get us there haven’t reached the status yet. They might try hard, but so does everyone else and this bunch just doesn’t have the skill to get the job done. I don’t think it’s a kneejerk reaction I just say like I see. Even if we drew this game and progressed it would have been disappointing, but we lost, miserably. Our recent transfer policy hasn’t been goof in my opinion. Hargo, Anderson and Berba (don’t even talk about 20 goal season, cause SAF didn’t even took him in CL Final squad)were waste of money and Valencia and Young still need to prove themselves. Chicha and Nani (already success), Smalling and Jones (good careers so far) were good business. That makes it two CM-s , two wingers and 30 mil striker brought who disappointed and that’s a lot of money for us right now.

I really needed to get this out. I still hope we win EPL, Fa cup and Europa (Hell yeh!!!) and I believe that SAF will take care of it, he always does.

Since we're not going to get the bulk of the Champions League money like we did last year, we have all the more reason to try and go all the way in the Europa League. That's 4 possible home games plus whatever tiny little money we can get from the broadcasting revenue.
