Also, no one knows what Rooney's form will be today. He looked in decline, all reports are about him "recovering" form,so whether he will be a top player for any team this season is yet to be seen. On last years form, he has a lot to do. This is the problem. The entire stupid season is going to end up being about an irrelevant squad player and ignoring the other players who perform and deserve time & attention. Rooney or no Rooney United have enough to beat Chelsea. If we lose the title it will be through conceding goals not failing to score.

It is sad how desperate fans are to pretend Rooney seemed happy to be at United and was keen to celebrate goals as normal. He celebrated neither, on one maybe he had an ankle issue. Of note, none of the players celebrated with him even though it was his assist. Usually the scorer hugs the assist guy.

I've said that this can be the season Welbeck explodes and today was a good start. Good composure for his second goal - and the technical execution was spot on, which he's shown before. I noticed last season that his link up with RVP is actually really good, be nice to see them get a run of games together.

Thought Rio and Vidic were also very solid. Valencia looked much more like the player we know. Unusually for him, he was a bit slack defensively! But as you all know, I judge wingers on what they do going forward and he was a constant threat, got a really good assist too.

If Rooney stays, we may well see a repeat of Ronaldo 2008/2009. Stroppy as fuck, lots of media hype, and plenty of quality. We saw all those 3 things in Ronaldo's last season and all those things today as well.

If you want proof of why we should sell him...you only have to look at his body language and the constant questions about him. But if you want proof of why we shouldn't sell him to Chelsea, and why he can still be a huge player for us....look at how he came on for half an hour, not fully fit (physically or mentally) - and still got 2 assists.

I see nothing wrong about samuel's stance on Rooney. For all the believe that Rooney is shitting all over the club, apart from Sir Alex confirming that Rooney asked to leave, for suggested reasons like lack of game time, he haven't really done anything. You can argue Ronaldo did even worse things like how he suggested the club is enslaving him. For Rooney, the worst thing he has done so far is being a coward and not coming out to set things right, and that in itself is making him look bad rather than the club.

Not defending him because it is beyond reasonable doubt that he does want to leave, but pretending he is such a shit player that even Januzaj can replace for this season is just plain silly. This is a season that is extremely important, not least because Sir Alex is no longer managing. People say you should not keep an unhappy player, but if you look at things calmly, the club is exactly showing Rooney who's boss. We don't care who you are and how much you are earning, if a lad who only scored 1 PL goal last season starts ahead of you, you should be looking at the mirror and reflect about what you did wrong. If you see nothing wrong, you can continue sitting there. Like how a Teacher is treating mischievous kid

Marq you're missing the point on my assessment of samuel but it doesn't matter.Rooney is shitting on the club and should've been gone in 2010,my opinion then which is documented on Rom. Ronnie is not comparable because he made it clear Madrid was the team he wanted to play for,never said he wanted to stay at Utd for life and NEVER after saying that negotiated a deal with fucking City behind Utd's back.Please correct me if i'm wrong but Ronnie never said Utd have no ambition and called his teammates SHIT

I am just looking at things on face value. If you ask me, I believe Ronaldo already had a deal agreed to sign for Real, all the personal terms would surely have been agreed before United came into the picture.

My point is, since nobody else wanted Rooney, he stays, selling based on emotion is never a good idea, especially not to your most dangerous competitor. Even Rooney at his worst form is an impeovement over what Chelsea have at the moment. We are not embracing Rooney, not anymore, but we should still embrace any contributions. What happened in 2010 is over. The fallout from that is we know we can't trust him, but he has since contributed to further titles. Who knows, maybe it was precisely because of Rooney ill advised stunt in 2010 that had Sir Alex realise he cant be trusted, hence we got Rvp.

Marq i'm quite sure that didn't happen,pretty well documented fact Sir Alex and Ronnie came to an arrangement but Ronnie never did anything in secret.He lived up to the deal and the split was amicable.Rooney has been a rent boy to me me since 2010,i don't like him,he earns to much and is not worth the hassle,again i'll point out i want Utd to fuck off Rooney and Maureen i despise Rooney i want him to learn a lesson and fucking rot

Trust me, if it was anywhere else, I would want Rooney gone immediately too. As it is now, between Rooney rotting on the bench or him going to Chelsea and improve them, letting him rot here is the lesser of 2 evils. Loves how every cat & dog out there sucking up to Rooney, from Gerrard to Hodgson, but United showing them the fingers and say Rooney isn't even good enough to start for us yet those pricks look at him as some saviour. DE GEA- 8 Made some decent saves. This boy is going to be the one of the best keepers in the world. Has improved a lot from his first season. Sadly couldnt do much about the goal.

JONES- 7.5 He is a beast but He is not a RB. Made some bad back passing early in the game but later on settled nicely. He is a Central Defender. Hope Rafael returns soon.

VIDIC- 9 He is our leader without doubt. He is an immence player to our success this season. If he stays fit we have a great chance of winning trophies as he showed yesterday. Great performance.

RIO - 9 Like Vidic , Rio was on top of his game. Made some crucial headers. If not for the two we could have conceded from set pieces. Great performance

EVRA- 8.5 His Crossing are great and his attacking play is admirable. He like other two defenders had a good game. Hope he keeps up the good work

VALENCIA- 6.5 Not a good game. Was surprised he was selected. But he hardly imposed himself in the game. But credit to him for making an assist. Really hope he regains his Old Form.

CARRICK- 8.5 He is a Master Class. What would happen to us without him. He is so Calm and controls the game. One of the best Midfielders in the World ( Yes He is).

CLEVELRLY- 7.5 This was one of the better performances by Tom. The problem with him is his Long passes are not good but His link up play is great. I actually like Tom and I feel as he he grows he will improve more. Important season for him.

GIGGS- 6 Missed some great chances in first half. I cant see him starting regularly and frankly he shouldnt start games. Again he showed his class in that first pass to RVP which led to the Goal. But Kagawa needs to start ahead of Giggs.

WELBECK- 8.5 It is his season. The boy has everything right now, Pace, Skill , Energy, Ball Control. The only thing he needs to improve is his Finishing and he scored a beautiful goal. That would give the lad an immense Confidence Boost. Imagine him scoring 25+ goals this season. He would have got a 9 if not for his stupid Mistake that cost us the Goal.

RVP- 9 Two absolute Genius Goals.He not only score goals but his ball control is also great. I never understand how he manages to score some real tough Goals like yesterday but misses some easy one. He is a Champion Player. Thank You Arsenal for giving us RVP. Hope he remains Fit.

SUBS

ROONEY- 7 Was rusty but still made two assists. I would keep him. No way should we sell him to Chelsea or Arsenal. He is a match winner. Bring back his smile. Imagine if he also sstarts scoring like RVP. We will have 4 great strikers.

ANDERSON- Will not rate him as he didnt have enough time. But I think he is extra motivated now and that can only be a good thing.

Overall this was a perfect start. Swansea Away is not an easy tie and teams later on will find difficult to beat them at their own turf. The thing that makes me more happy was Swansea were not bad , We were really good. They gave us a Fight but we managed to give a great performance. Promising Signs.

@ Marq - And you change your view every 5 minutes. Lots of people have made their mind up about Rooney one way or another, so I don't get your stupid comment. Absolutely I have made my mind up about Rooney, I don't want United to keep a player who clearly does not want to be here. I also don't think he is as good or needed as he was. And I am glad you agree with me that he is obviously not happy in the shirt.

Basically, I agree with @ Goat, even if he is sold to Chelsea it does not mean we can't beat them. There is also the point wayne made that it would be galling that Maureen got his way. But on balance if Chelsea pay £40/50mn plus add ons...why not. Eto would do a similar job if Chelsea bought him and they are also rumoured to be trying for Lewandowski. So far their bids for Rooney have been joke level given Carrol sold for £35mn. Chelsea will buy a good striker at some point in any event. £250k/wk on bench or in reserves to me seems ridiculous money to waste.

Ronnie was far less replaceable than Rooney. In fact we still have not replaced Ronnie whereas RVP has already replaced Rooney as lead striker. So we are talking about replacing a 2nd choice striker. It comes down to what people think of Danny & Pea. I think they can do Rooney's job no problem and cover for RVP, others don't. I also have no interest in a season dominated by Rooney drama. If he is not played enough will he hand in a transfer request in Jan? It is just getting ridiculous.

I am a neutral in Rooney's case. Honestly I dont want him to be sold to chelsea or Arsenal or City. Rooney will improve them and I dont want that to happen. On the the other hand I feel Rooney behaves like Dick. The most frustrating thing about him is he still is not honest enough. If he wants to leave then tell everybody that. I feel he wants to stay but wants more opportunity. Son you have to earn for that. He is worried that he may not get chance in next year WC. It would be stupid to think that he will not improve chelsea line up because he will.

I don't understand why the hullabaloo regarding Rooney whilst it was reported the Glazers had a meeting on the subject and decided he's not being sold as a SHOW OF FORCE AND INTENT. Their thinking being informed by what has transpired at other premier league clubs that became selling clubs ala Arsenal. It was also to assist in re-emphasizing the managers position at old trafford. Rooney knows he has no option but stay and run down his contract. And in relation to this, why Sir Alex came out publicly on Rooney's desire to leave was to protect the ship at old Trafford in light of a new manager taking over. Imagine what would have happened had Fergie left quietly and DM came in to encounter Rooney's request to leave? Its more likely Rooney would have managed to force a transfer in those circumstances. Then what for the remaining players, would they continue in the same old mood, what of the ability to bring in new players?
That announcement by Ferguson was a Masterstroke of a Genius!

It was a great game. I no the feeling you have mate I used to be a season ticket holder but moved to Australia 2 years ago. I'm back in England for a few of weeks so I am not missing any of the games.
My thoughts on Rooney is he will stay here for another season and be sold next summer. Imo I think he will have a great season as the world cup is next year and he can't afford to have a bad season. I think that will work to our advantage as we would get a better price for him and we would also have a year to find a replacement.

Watching United yesterday and the passion lads like Danny, Phil and Tom show is top drawer. Also Smalling, Evans and Rafa etc. These lot can help us gain great success. Not a bunch of rentboys. Fucking love the club they do. Could do worse than a Ross Barclay. Another great English talent who we can develop. A huge strong lad. Great touch. Positionally sound. Such power. Gotta add this in but love Paddy. Epitomizes United. What a rock Vida is.

How poor were Arsenal? Embarrassing. Really embarrassing.

A cracking start and makes you wonder what the various 'football writers' were smoking when they have came up with a United in 3rd place prediction.

As for the R-word, his solemn look yesterday is that of a man that wants to be starting week in, week out and receiving the type of adulation RvP receives from the United faithful. Train hard, keep focused and he will regain automatic starter status.

We have left the 7 and 9 jerseys vacant, but looking at the strength in depth of that title winning squad, I'd only consider giving them to the very best in the world - not Fellaini, not Ozil and not to fading stars like Kaka, as has been mooted this morning.

An idiotic comment, says the man that wants to sell united's key assets to one of its main rivals because he personally despises him. You'll run yourself bonkers and slit yourself, united will have to keep rooney, the club must protect moyes, who will find the job difficult anyway but hopefully he comes through it, the club must always aim to stay ahead of its rivals, the glazers need the united machine oiled, running and pumping out money. Personal hatred are for those with nothing better to do, it's a game of football and a boundary must be set.

Those with rational thoughts know united has to be protected and that's making sure rooney is adequately replaced in the long run, either with the likes of welbeck etc improving more and more to do that and with other quality coming in.

Is rooney irreplaceable? Not really but can his impact and ability be easily disregarded? You would have to think twice, he's been and can still be a key contributor in goals, assists, all round play and the drive, he has been and still is a massive influence in the team, he'a been here 10years now and has delivered for united at all levels, he's been and still is united's most proven threat at the very top and some irrational people, getting their pampers wet think you can easily dispatch players like that, a fulcrum of the team despite van persie's form

A lot of people are busy hating those that they'll never know personally, grudges are for the weak minded and I have better things to do with my time than to go out burning effigys of players. Rooney is an employee of manchester united and an asset, he's a match winner and united need as much of them at the very top, the club may need bailing out more often and with Robin, javier, welbeck, rooney, you have four attackers with quality and variation, add the likes of will keane (returning from injury) and henriquez coming through, a strong attack is gradually being formed.

It's the world cup year and with the stick rooney has been getting for his lack of sharpness for an england team that will never win a tournamenr anyway, it may be the best time to avoid mourinho motivating him, rooney may have his flaws but he is hardworking and mainly wants to focus on his football, doing well for united will only aid him regardless of him seeking to leaving or not, rooney at united is better than one at chelsea (i cannor confirm that, all I've read is a load of bollocks from those that personally hate him and a media driven to aid classless mourinho in toppling united).

I think eventually rooney will be fazed out but it will be gradual. Players have to step up and take more responsibilities of being match winners consistently at every level, united can be fully confident with the players breaking through, already established and being bought they can rise to the ocassion as rooney has done since he was 18, united must protect itself.

@Samuel AMEN....the way some fans think, club would bancrupt in less than a year. They think it is so easy to find another world class striker. No one wants to sell great players, because it s hard to find them, and when you find them, you have 10 other rich clubs that want to buy him at any cost. In bussines you have to be wise. You lose sponsors, fans...- you lose money. Who you gonna recover? Why United offer so much money for players, but not in SAF era? Becuase Moyes is not SAF. So they need to give him great players if they want him to continue wining. And that is not going to happend if we sell Rooney

Anyone who has the time to slag off United during the game is NOT a football fan. Like the real lovers of the game I look forward to every second and the possibility of witnessing a golden moment. Hence being glued to the screen from the start. After half an hour people are on here slagging of Wellbeck and Cleverly? When are people going to realise that slagging off individuals simply by saying they aren't good enough proves you have no knowledge of the game and that you think you know more about the game than Alex Ferguson, David Moyes, the entire coaching staff of United and England. If you have some criticism that maybe Fergie or moyes need to hear, why don't you give them a bell? I'm sure they'll thank you and welcome you on board.

I think Rooney should actually look at the bid amounts from Chelsea and ask the question if he is only really worth that much.

Let me be clear, I don't like him for what he is doing currently to the club. There is 2 more years left on his contract and ideally there shouldn't have been any talks about him now. His failure to come out and say his side of story or atleast deny the newspaper rumors is very bad to the team's morale.

But as a player, when committed, is one hell of a player. Can be a striker at one minute and run the length of the field to defend at the goal mouth in the next moment. He plays everywhere and is definitely an asset.

If Cavani and Falcao can go for $50M+ and a certain Spaniard also being brought for similar amount by that same club which is bidding for him, he should look at their seriousness in their attempt and how he would be valued in their team.

$25M is such a meager amount for a player like Rooney. Rooney at Man Utd will be bigger than Rooney at any other club.

Hope he comes to his senses and gets on with the season while also signing a new contract.

After watching MOTD last night I'm delighted that we're being written off as being behind City & Chelsea. Moyes can use that to create the all-important siege mentality. I'm quietly confident after the Swansea game. Let Mourinho waffle on and City fork out yet more huge sums, I reckon we're one classy midfielder away from storming the league this year. Could be a cracking season! At least 2 trophies on the way :-D

Costas - you will give ross barkley one or two seasons at least to firm up the claims that he's got the quality but for sure, british players can be hyped up, you have to keep a keen eye on them to see the quality and not get fed bullshit by alan shearer. I think he's got potential and martinez has that ability of developing younger players. I think tunnicliffe hasn't kicked on due to the fact he needs to add more quality to his aggression and drive. He needs to improve several aspects of his game in terms of passing, composure, discipline on the pitch etc in order to stand a chance. He's on loan now
