Januzaj looked a gem once again. Whats frightening is that he already displays more ability and composure on the ball a great many 1st team regulars. Forget his age, he walks into that team alongside Carrick and one of Cleverley or Anderson.

Pre-season or not, I'm really concerned at the rate we're shipping goals this pre-season, with neither Smalling or Evans inspiring any confidence once again.

Disappointed with Moyes' lack of grace at the end when walking past all the kids waiting for autographs, maybe that's the humble, principled scot we've all heard so much about??? Instead of stropping at losing his first game at O.T, maybe he'd better off ensuring he achieves just one of his transfer targets.

How come when both leagues restart, Sevilla looked so much fitter and alert? The lack of technique and penetration displayed by in the most part was once again frighteningly evident, friendly or otherwise.

City are stronger than last season. Last season Balotelli was a mess, the squad and Mancini had fallen out and they weren't even trying for him Dzeko is a decent striker. Tevez was a top player, and they have lost him but City have a huge squad, their MF can score - Yaya, Da Silva, with more unity and harmony I expect them to be there or thereabouts.

City's strike force may be a question but they are well stocked in defenders, defensive mid and attacking mids.

I think Chelsea will be the biggest threat if they get Lukaku firing, I think Lukaku is a good player and he will offer more than Ba or Torres. Hazard is likely to be sharper in front of goal and more used to the EPL. Oscar and Mata will make solid contributions.

Van Ginkel is a defensive mid in the Lampard mould. He looks to be a good player for £8m.

Last season we conceded alot of goals, more than the year we drew with City on points. The reason we won and got away with it was others did not score as many and RVP scored a tonne. We are very reliant on RVP and Carrick to hold things together, especially with Rooney situation. Our defensive stats were poor last year, we need to improve those to hold the league.

It seems every team have strenghenede themselves. Chelski for me have bar to none, theo nly plus thing is Lukaku who they will need.

City boutgh FernandinWho? Navas who is a good winger, and Negredo who wil pick some goals, that's it.
Arsenal? nada. Pool are stronger also, but nothing like us and Tottenham are strong also, without Bale not close to us.

BUT WE, are nothign close to anything, we, Manchester United, are not strong with the squad who won last year, and probably will get a couple of players in also. Supporters showing their true colours. no it's not great at the moment, but when pre-seasons have been?

@NBI Red Moyesy ---> You are putting way too much emphasis on pre-season. The ONLY thing that matters in pre-season is that players get time on the pitch and some other commercial reasons. There's nothing competitive about it.

I mean look at the pre-season before the 10-11 season (the CHAMPI9NS season), we went to play against MLS/MEX opponents and lost a couple of games there too (Chivas de Guadalajara and Kansas City Wizards I think?). The next year, we went there again and I don't think we lost any.. we even beat Barcelona, but it made no difference to our season at all, we won fuck all, didn't make the last 16 etc. Pre-season means absolutely nothing. We had a boring as hell pre-season last year too, it meant nothing at all.

You are right that the squad that played tonight didn't really look like one that is going to dominate the league and that's because it's not. Moyes is NEVER going to play that line up in a premier league game unless there was an enormous injury crisis and he literally had no other choice. We conceded two goals with that line up, then made changes, scored and looked a lot better. We were unlucky on a few occasions not to equalize. But that doesn't matter anyway, it was a non-competitive game, in the back of the players minds, the loss has no consequences at all. That won't be the same in the league.

Last year, we had terrible problems in defense at points over the season, but the squad absorbed it so well. The amount of come backs etc. made the season memorable. To write it off as "the other teams were shit" is a bit unbelievable to me. It's exactly what a liverpool fan would say to explain how we won the league with four games to go. I'm sorry if that offends you but its just true. For the longest time we've been listening to the same old criticisms of United's teams. Remember.. we'll "never win anything with kids" and even before that? Every season we're told we had 1 player who carried us. Last year when we needed to find goals we FOUND them way more often than not, and THAT is the United I remember for my LONG time now as a dedicated supporter.

But ye... everyone just needs to relax and accept there will be a certain level of disruption for a while due to the managerial change anyway. We have the whole country and more rooting against us right now, hoping that the end of Fergie is the end of the era. Only defiance all around will stop their hate-inspired fantasies from coming true.

I actually don't mind Ando's Bizarre passes. They are almost always positive in their nature and while the success rate may not be great they are the kind of actions that in Tennis get called Good Errors because it plants that seed in the opponents mind and can make them hesitate slightly rather than knowing for certain what a players going to do

the thing is .. once we get started, if things fall apart, the media will say.. "all the warning signs were visible during pre-season" if we get started positively, we'll hear "Moyes used pre-season to take a look at the players, and has chosen a good starting 11.." etc. Can't win.

Regardless, you can tell pre-season or not where the weakness is and it needs to be fixed.

@ WeAreUnited - haha, sure I am the truth the light, whatever you want sunshine, I have been on this blog from pretty much the start of it, many years before you, not interested if people do post with double names, but even I who never care or look for these things have noticed a few odd things lately. Maybe its just coincidence. Basically, I don't really care about that stuff, more interested in the quality of comments. Your comment that posters should ignore other United fans who are critical of the team was poor in my view. People can comment to who they want. Stop dividing fans. If you disagree provide a reason. Also after a game people will be critical, don't want to see that don't come on any United blog, that does not mean we are not "good" fans, it means we see issues that need to be addressed and raising them as they concern us.

@ Wakey - Ando going forward has been good, he runs at defenders and his passing was better second half. The point is there are times you play hollywood balls and times when the team is under pressure that you focus on keeping possession. I actually think Ando has shown enough in attack to merit a place in the squad.

It's his defence that worries me. A few times I counted him busting a gut to try to reach reach an opposing player bearing in on goal and he never caught them, most he could do was bump them from behind. I don't know is this is his fitness or his pace. A few times he did not even track back. MF players need to cover a wider area, he looks good attacking but he has to focus on his defensive duties too, when he does not it overloads the defence and also stops players like Carrick getting forward.

Carrick played a few hollywood balls to but they were different class. We really need a MF who allows Carrick to get forward as he is our best attacking and defensive mid and we really need him to link MF and attack as well, he is wasted being pushed back to cover the back 4 all the time.

I have had my bad shares with @wayne but as the supporter of the same team I have always responded to him cause he's a true one. So no not dividing people, if you truly have been here longer than me, then you should know who to comment and who are paracites, vampires waiting for United t o play badly and ambush.

i'ts a different thing to give an opinion of our game, and different for people liek you to say we won it because others played badly. WHAT THE HELL? and you call me what?

as for someone using something the same as me saying peace, I don't know, maybe I am getting a fanbase? why can't you concentrate on commenting? don't try to be a "good" supporter now. Pretty p*ss stuff tonight, but expected with a Trophy on the line in 2 days time. Couldn't believe they had Owen Hargreaves commenting on my live feed. Cricky the lad is still bitter.
Lovely player but needs to get some therapy. That lad was robbed by his cartilage problems, not by us. Still won the lot with us. Great player before the cartilage brought him low.
Hargo had trouble forming proper sentences and couldn't be bothered talking about how good Januazj played. Whewww, What was that about.
Adnan was the MOTM for me, very impressive in my view. Lots to look forward to from him.

Bring on the Shield, thank gods we are about to start some proper football.

Not a proper night to focus on negative I suppose. All about Rio in my book.

@ Dela - agree the team will be different but Ando-Clev are not exactly players who will benched, one of them has to start with Carrick unless Jones plays in MF and he is not a MF player. Buttner was our best attacking outlet alongside Januzaj.

@ edcunited1878 - same point - we have a good defensive line up and 2 CMF players who should be starting games now, we had an experience RW player. The weak point was the striker. But the MF and defence were poor.

@ NBI - agree any United team should have done a bit better than this, how long do we have to rely on the older players like Giggs? Savilla are not exactly in top form themselves or with their top players fit - they even played a game yesterday and we still lost to them. Any team United put out should have done better.

Kagwa's touch was very poor. Valencia has not been crossing well for a long time. He used to be able to hit Rooney on the head all day long a while back when they paired for fun.

Januzaj - get his contract signed. Top top top player. Same birthday as Ronnie, 10 years younger, same class.

very good indeed. The thing is. .. he needs SOLID people behind him to form the backbone and then people like him can flourish freely. Our backbone is on life support which makes players like Adnan opportunities put under crazy pressure.

Wakey - he's 18, he isn't going to be spot on rdefensively yet, he will learn the tactical side, these are basics of football that can be taught and done effectively with more experience but for me, his strenghths should be what we should try emphasise, januzaj is a very gifted footballer, I think his quality will prevail over the physical side. I think the premier league,has evolved with more technical players, even stoke have changed philosophy. I think as januzaj gets older, he'll develop stronger buf I can see him breaking in this season, maybe not regularly but he'll get in the team on merit and will push out some floundering first team players. I think he's ready and accompained with more experience, he'll only get better.

weareunited, you've posted people who post a lot ..like every 5 minutes, I guess that makes them great posters. there are lots on here who post only when they have something meaningful and relevant to say vs picking fights, arguing over insignificant and petty stuff etc, keyboard warriors.

Personally, sifting through 50 comments that have nothing to do with united before reading something meaningful footy related gets super annoying. Unless you're having a tactical debate, just leave shit alone and stop having a keyboard war on this blog wasting everyone's time.

Having said that, back to topic. I want us penetrating teams straight through the middle without going out wide every move forward. Anderson tries to do this quite often which I appreciate, but the execution fails far too often, unfortunately.
Hope we can bring the proper reinforcements this summer so that we can

@ midfield-man - the fact Adnan at 18 decided to take the game by the scruff of the neck and almost did says it all:

- created the goal for Valencia, put it on a plate with absolute brilliance and persistence
- was all over the pitch, popping up left, right, centre making things happen
- took some decent free kicks /corners
- some of his passing was unbelievable, Scholes like, hit Lingard on the head in the box with a beauty
- defensively he rarely let a player get past him, rarely lost possession, tackled, harassed, tracked back, defended from the front
- beautiful step overs, short passes, long passes, crosses, chances created, he has is all.

1 assist, could have been 2 or 3. Had one decent chance to score.

Zaha also did well, almost scored. Fabio put in a good cross that Lingard just couldn't finish. One of the step overs from Zaha before his shot was just ridiculous. An exciting player.

Lingard got to 2 good chances but couldn't quite finish them.

I really hope to God we will never again see Jones in MF. That is one step forward, three steps back for united imo. Buttner is not responsible enough for me. He's very unaware of the dangers and I for one would never trust him in any big game. We should try to give him some game time in smaller matches when we're leading, but I would never take a chance on him over Evra at any significant game YET.

@Costas and @King Eric. I understand what you mean about Kagawa and Valencia. Neither have played much and I understand where they are but can we make that excuse for Cleverley and Anderson who have been at Carrington since day one of pre-season? I don't think so. Like I said. I can excuse players who have not played more than two games cuz they will clearly be rusty but i can't excuse players who have featured in five games already. Nani in his small stint against AIK looked sharper than Cleverley has looked all pre season. And seeing as these two players in particular will feature a lot very early inthe season (we have no signings yet), it's worrying. We were cut open straight down the middle twice in the first half. It was like we were playing with 9 men.

Guaranteed we will be much better on Sunday but that will be because we will be featuring much MUCH better players than what we had out there today. I'm not worried about anywhere else but the middle of the park.

@ WeAreUnited - there is difference between being a fan and a fool. Last season our opponents were not as strong as they had been before for a number of reasons but mainly their strikers were crap and we took advantage of that. Internally, City squad was in chaos and that affected them too. Chelsea changed manager during the season. We on the other hand had stability, a magnificent strike force that covered up the fact that we conceded a high number of goals and actually conceded more than the year before. Which part of that don't you understand? We had a great offence. But defensively there were weaknesses that we were punished for. Ofcourse winning the league is a great achievement and its not easy, some of our attacking play last season was phenomenal and De Gea and Rafael stepped up Carrick was a master. Also I don't know how long you have been watching the EPL but winning by double digits is considered walking it.

We had obvious weaknesses too. Everyone knows MF needs strengthening. Defensively, sometimes look shaky. In pre-season the same weaknesses and strengths showed. We were good for goals, but there was a lack of stability and strength in MF and defence. SAF always improved teams as he understood to stay ahead you constantly have to strengthen. I cannot see that we have done that yet. Will this team win the league. It is in with a shout on paper. But without Rooney/ good replacement, we could be weaker, an injury to Carrick or RVP and we could be in problems.

CMF: Carrick, Ando, Cleverly, Giggs, Jones, Kagwa, Januzaj. Fletch if fit.

Two of those are not natural MF players. I love Giggs, but I don't want to see him starting games in CMF all the time. Kagwa needs time, Januzaj and Ando are more attacking.

All of the things you mentioned, I couldn't agree with more. Adnan is the most ready I think out of all of the young players for the next step and he needs to be given more chances no question. The way he fought his way into the box to cross into to Vanencia was very admirable. Having him try to do the same against let's said Ivanovitc could be another story :), but I really do have every confidence in this lad progressing to a great player.

Having said that, you absolutely need the proper backbone for him to flourish. When the game turns on us, you need the experience, the cool, the clinical pass that will slice through the a wall of defenders and let players like Adnan do what he can do very well.

I am still waiting for Moyes to do what I really expect of him, and that is to reinforce the midfield. I know he will. I know. He must.

I don't think personally that he needs time. I don't think time will change anything for Kagawa, as he needs the proper supporting cast. Once he gets that we will be devastating.

a fan and a fool. very well put. think about it. yes they had bad seasons, but should we had canceled the league so they start getting ready? of course not. do you think we had it easy? how long have you wathced United? we lost to Everton on our first game. and it did not look good. but still, we managed to fight. others did not.

it was not an easy season for us neither. 10 or more combacks in the league, narrow wins, and no, won every big team at least once. barcelona walked their league off.
we did not walk it off, yes winning by 11points is big, a very big difference, but if you followed every game last season, you know it well that it was far from walking it off.

I agree, we need those freaking midfielders to cover us, why because every year we need to be better, and sometimes it accuires only 1 player to make the difference, and this season it could be a youngster or maybe a second RVP case.

but you crossed the line, accusing me, when I clearly never attacked you, I just said it's BS thinking tht we walked it off.

Zaha, Ando and Januzaj were 3 players really trying to make it happen. But the ability of Januzaj and Zaha, their sheer lightness of foot, skill and talent, made old Ando look a little like a plodding horse and Cleverly looked ordinary by comparison. All the things Ando tried to do Januzaj and Zaha did.

I thought we were past Jones in MF. Guess he's back. Lol!!!

Also Januzaj was voted BT MOTM. What an accolade in your first home game. Moyes sign him up !!! Don't send him on loan please.

@ WeAreUnited - the reason we needed so may comebacks was as we kept conceding goals. Often through errors. Often against weaker teams that walked through our MF. Fortunately our excellent attack and never say die attitude bailed us out. No comebacks are not easy. That is why we need to strengthen defensively and in MF.

@ Fletch - he is clearly fit to play. I don't think his fitness is the reason he is not in the squad and training with the youth team and reserves. Nice to see Rooney is still trying to make out United are mean to him even after Moyes and so many others like Sir Bobby coming out and basically kissing his ass to get him to play nice. It riled my stomach when Sir Bobby was reduced to pleading with Rooney to stay and try to break his record. Still does Rooney thank him. No, he writes what you posted. Fletcher even came out and said he was worried re Rooney and complimented him. His arse has been kissed loudly with toungue on both hairy buttocks by United yet his games continue, sure he is loving the attention and the fact we are not winning. Waiting for Chelsea to offer £40m. They will by season end.

As far as strengthening the side is concerned, for me the midfield is second priority. Arsenal had a good midfield and attack, but they did not win anything because of their bad defense. The fullback position needs addressing, specially left side. Evra has his bad moments in every game and Buttner although good going forward, is still a rookie defensively. On the right, if Rafael is not playing then the right side also looks shaky if we use Fabio or Jones. In the center of defense, Smalling and Jones need more games to improve their reading of the play. At the moment they are still the rookies we signed 2-3 years ago. They need to grow up fast because Ferdinand and Vidic are growing more injury prone with every game.

On the positive side both Januzaj and Zaha are the bright sparks that will shine more brightly as the season goes on.

5 teams finished above 70 points last season and only 1 of those teams finished above 80. I will take another league winning side like that all day.

It is a bit harsh to suggest that the title winning United squad won last year due to the rest of the contenders being poor. What results made them poor? The fact is, United has the team to win the PL this season if Van Persie and Carrick stay healthy.

I do not think you can argue that any other squad in the PL can lose their 2 most important players and still win the league. It just does not work that way.

That said, I like most fans, would love to see Welbeck push Van Persie out and Cleverley push Carrick out. Until they do that, support their cause and encourage the team to do better. Slating those players as "not United quality" or "never going to be good enough" is not support. That is just plain bitterness and it belongs at the Etihad, not Old Trafford.

In fairness to Moyes he's been using these friendlies to make up his own mind about players as well as to promote their fitness and attune them generally in advance the new season. I mean, even Bebe got a run out... It's as if DM is actively trying to give everyone the chance- a fresh chance in some cases- to prove their worth considering in his plans regardless of 'previous' or reputation or youth. That's a good sign. Rooney obviously thinks he above all this so has fucked off (or been fucked off) to the reserves. That's good too. If Wayne goes, then so be it. But if Wayne stays he knows Moyes won't tolerate any prima-donna bullshit. Moreover, Rooney's likely to be fired up to prove his critics wrong and secure his place in England's World Cup squad.

Yes it sucks to lose, friendly or not, as winning is a good habit and losing a bad one. But sometimes you need to need to take a few hits to move on.
