Fernando Torres has a blinding first season in the Premiership, yet his team finished fourth in the league, were knocked out by Chelsea in the Champions League and League Cup, and were knocked out by Barnsley in the FA Cup.
After winning the European Championships with Spain this summer, he will surely be hungry for more success. Liverpool have fallen at their first hurdle, getting knocked out of the League Cup by Spurs last night, but Torres insists their eye is on the league title, something they haven’t won since 1990. As concerned as he is with Liverpool winning the Premiership, he still is aware that if United win the title this season, they equal their record, something he recognises would massively upset the fans.
“When I arrived everyone talked about the league,” said Torres. “We have won it 18 times and Manchester United 17, if they win it this season then they draw level and the fans don’t want that. I think 90 per cent of Liverpool fans would prefer the league. The rivalry between the two sides is so intense, it is like Barca and Madrid or even stronger.”
