Chris Smalling cost United any points in the derby with two ridiculous yellow cards and was deserving of being sent off.

At the time of being interviewed, Van Gaal hadn’t seen Smalling’s pathetic first yellow card, but it would be interesting to witness the conversation the manager has with the player when he does.

I didn’t see the first yellow, but as a player if you know you have a yellow card you have to deal with that problem. I don’t think he dealt with it very smartly.

Captain Wayne Rooney believes that Smalling will learn from the experience.

Chris is disappointed. It’s tough when you get sent off, especially in a derby and with such a long time to go in the game it made it difficult for the rest of us to hold on. I’m sure Chris will learn from that.
