New manager Erik ten Hag has confirmed today that he won’t be making any changes to the decision of captaincy, with Harry Maguire continuing to wear the armband next season.

Harry Maguire is the captain. Of course, I have to get to know all the players and it takes time. But he is an established captain for a few years and he has achieved a lot of success, so I don’t doubt about this issue.

Following a particularly poor season from the defender, like pretty much everyone else in the squad, he faced lots of scrutiny from Manchester United fans. There were reports that even death threats were sent to him.

Maguire had aggravated the fan base after his celebration for England after scoring against Albania. In the weeks before, Maguire had played a key role in United getting thrashed at home 5-0 by Liverpool and 2-0 by City, but after his goal on international duty he slid on his knees cupping his ears. The criticism he’d had received had been warranted but instead of taking accountability, he seemed to believe that a goal against Albania for England made up his woeful performances for United.

The captain further frustrated many supporters when, with a month of the season to go, he again refused to accept that he had been playing badly.
