Robin van Persie was named the fans’ player of the year at tonight’s end of season awards. The announcement came as no surprise, with Robin set to win the Golden Boot this season too. He has scored so many great goals and so many important goals that he seemed an obvious choice for the Sir Matt Busby player of the year.
Robin received 41.5% of the combined votes on our seven language websites, to beat Michael Carrick 29% and David De Gea 11.5% into second and third place respectively.
Van Persie also received the award for the goal of the season for the brilliant volley in our title clinching game against Aston Villa, thanks to a lovely assist from Wayne Rooney.
“It was instinct,” he said. “I looked up and thought: ‘This ball is so nice, it’s too beautiful to take a touch.’ Had it been half a metre to the left or right I couldn’t have hit it. Wayne and I had been talking about playing balls in behind the right centre-back all week. We’d talked about it in training almost every day, then before the game Wayne said: ‘Robin, don’t forget that ball, I’ll give you that ball today.’ And it was the perfect pass, it was phenomenal. All I had to do was time my run correctly. In the last second I decided to hit it and I was lucky everything fitted together.”
