One reason for the success of Manchester United is the offensive prowess of its two top scorers, Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford.
Fernandes is a 26-year-old native of Portugal who joined Manchester United during the 2019-2020 season. He is an attacking midfielder and his ability to see the field well and anticipate where the ball is going to be help make him a dangerous offensive force. He also has an extremely good shot.
Fernandes started his pro career with Novara back in 2012 when he was just 18. He scored four goal during his first season and helped the team to a fifth place finish.
From 2013-2016, Fernandes moved on to play for Udinese. In that time, his goal scoring prowess increased and he scored 10 total goals for Udinese during his stay with the team.
In the summer of 2016, Fernandes was loaned to Sampdoria. He spent one year there and scored five goals in 33 Serie A appearances. His first goal for Sampdoria came against Cagliari Calcio in a game his club lost 2-1.
In 2017, Fernandes signed with Sporting CP and his career with his new organization started with a bang. He scored four goals in his first five Primeira Liga contests to immediately set himself up as a star player for his new club.
The following year, Fernandes was named Primeira Liga Player of the Year. He scored a total of 31 goals in competitive games for Sporting CP including a hat trick in an 8-1 victory over Belenenses SAD.
Fernandes joined Manchester United in January of 2020, just before the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. The following month, he scored his first goal for United in a 3-0 win over Watford. He had an immediate impact for Manchester United and was named the Premier League’s Player of the Month for February.
This season, he is leading the team in goals scored and has become one of the Premier League’s most dangerous and respected players.
British native Marcus Rashford is Manchester United’s second leading goal scorer so far this season. Unlike Fernandes, Rashford has been associated with the club since he was seven years old and came up through the organisation.
Rashford is an impact player and he has been a catalyst for Manchester United in many competitions. Although he’s only 23, the Manchester native has already helped his teams win the EFL Cup, the FA Community Shield, the FA Cup and the Europa League. He has also represented England at the 2018 World Cup.
Rashford is a dangerous player with the ball. He can play several positions but does the most damage when playing left wing. That allows him to use his right foot more effectively as he cuts towards the middle of the pitch and into the most dangerous scoring areas near the opposing club’s goal.
So far, Rashford’s most productive offensive season came in 2019-20 when he scored 17 Premier League goals in 31 matches played. Six of those goals came on penalty kicks. It was the second consecutive season Rashford scored 10 or more goals in the Premier League and he is rapidly closing in on a third straight year this season.
In addition to his success on the field, Rashford is extremely active in charity work in the community. He has been a big part of the In the Box campaign which helps provide the homeless with essentials at Christmas time.
He has also helped poor children who were no longer receiving free meals at school during the pandemic when in person learning was suspended. He helped raise more than 20 million pounds for poor children nationwide to help compensate for the lack of school lunches.
Rashford has been recognized internationally for his charity work which demonstrates that he wants to make a difference in the community and use his fame and influence to help people.
With both Fernandes and Rashford healthy and playing well, Manchester United remains one of the best teams in the Premier League. As long as they continue to play well, the future looks bright for Man U.
