Manchester United fans have had a strong relationship with their Argentinean players over the years. Gabriel Heinze, Carlos Tevez and Marcos Rojo were all loved by the fanbase, even if the relationship soured with some of them as time went by.
Lisandro Martinez is the latest player from South America who the fans have warmed to, with him walking off the field after the recent 2-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur to chants of “Argentina!”.
Speaking to the club’s official website, Martinez spoke about how much it means to him to get the fans’ support.
To be honest, it’s very emotional for me [hearing the fans sing for him]. I’m at one of the best clubs in the world. This stadium, the atmosphere is amazing. When I heard the fans singing, I wanted to cry. This result is for my grandmother and my grandfather, who are not with me now, but I always feel that love with me.
We [had] a top performance tonight and we controlled the game. I’m really happy because this team deserves it – we always try hard and we always want to play on this level.
I think we were very solid in defence tonight. They [Kane and Son] have a lot of quality, very strong, and a lot technical [ability] as well. I think we controlled the game tonight, it’s great also to get a clean sheet.
