Lisandro Martinez signed for Manchester United this summer from Ajax and immediately was under intense scrutiny from sections of the media because of his height. But Erik ten Hag’s faith in the defender has been rewarded, with the Argentinian quickly becoming a fans’ favourite and playing an integral role in defence.
Having already won league titles in Holland, and the World Cup a few months ago with Argentina, he has spoken to the club’s official site about his happiness at claiming his first trophy, following United’s 2-0 win over Newcastle in the League Cup.
What a big feeling, and to win my first trophy here at Manchester United, it means a lot to me, but also for the group. I think we deserve it and we worked very hard for this. You can also see on the pitch the connection with the people and the fans. I am so happy to be honest. The first one means a lot. I am really happy to be honest to win this trophy.
There were plenty of Argentina flags in the Wembley crowd for Martinez and he has again spoken of his praise for the impact the fans have.
Like I have said in a few interviews, we don’t play alone, we play with the people and the fans. [They help us] to play with extra energy. You could see it on the pitch today, we did an amazing job. We defended very well and we attacked very well. I am so proud to play for this amazing club.
