Lisandro Martinez has made a great start to life at Manchester United after joining from Ajax in the summer, with Erik ten Hag keen to bring in the centre-back after managing him in Holland.

Playing alongside Raphael Varane, he is proving to be a reliable defender who plays with the guts and determination that fans love to see.

“ARGENTINA! ARGENTINA!” is regularly heard chanted by United fans, just as it was for players like Gabriel Heinze and Marcos Rojo before him.

After beating Sheriff Tiraspol 2-0 on Thursday night, Martinez has spoken to MUTV about what it means to him to hear the fans chanting for him.

I am really happy. I am a little bit surprised by that, but at the same time I feel proud to come here, the best club in the world and for the people to say ‘Argentina, Argentina’ for me it is amazing. Thanks to the fans for the support.

After losing the opening game in the Europa League group, Martinez reflected on how important it was to get a win.

Tonight we had to win as we needed the three points. It was very important to us. We work very hard everyday in training and today Sancho scored a fantastic goal. But also how we played was fantastic, as I think everyone touched the ball and then Sancho finished it. It was a fantastic finish and everyone celebrated it.

We know how big Cristiano Ronaldo’s goals are. It is very important that he scored tonight for his confidence and for the team. We win 2-0 and it is great for us.
