Mason Mount scored Manchester United’s winner against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park at the weekend as he’s starting to get some regular playing time under his belt.

His signing was a strange one, given the pricetag for a player who was on a free the following summer and the pressing need to strengthen in positions other than his. But Erik ten Hag couldn’t let the opportunity to sign Mount pass him by, having been a fan of the former Chelsea player since he had been loaned out to Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem.

Mount has spoken about one of his characteristics that impresses his manager, his ability to read and understand the game. He has discussed this in an interview with Inside United.

I always watched the games since I was a kid. I really, really looked into games and I watched games. I like to watch positions, not just the ball. I like to watch how players kind of move in their position and what positions they take up on the pitch. I did that since I was a kid.

So, yeh, I think I understand the game a lot and, when you’re on the pitch, it can be difficult at times because it’s 100 miles an hour. There is a lot going on. Subs come on into the game or you have a formation change a little bit, so the team that you’re playing against sets up differently than what you are prepared for.

These are all things that happen in the game and you’ve kind of got to adapt to that. But I always see myself as one that really studies the game and understands, if the opposition changes, how we change and adapt as a team and it’s trying to get that communication across to the rest of the lads.
