David Moyes’ time as Manchester United manager was an unmitigated disaster, with the current Sunderland manager taking the champions of England to seventh in the title. We finished below Everton, his former club, despite signing their top scorer from the season before, yet Moyes has never admitted any of his failings. To the contrary, Moyes argues he deserved more time as manager. His failures at Real Sociedad and Sunderland have done little to support his claim.
One of the many mistakes he made was clearing out the title winning backroom staff and replacing them with his team, whose greatest achievement was working with players at Preston and Everton.
Ahead of Sunderland’s game against Hull, who are managed by Mike Phelan who lost his job when Moyes was appointed, Moyes has defended this decision. He has likened the decision to Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho bringing in their own staff, who all had experience of winning titles, unlike Steve Round and Jimmy Lumsden.
It was tough because I understand how important [Phelan had been] and the good work he had done. But I also had to make a decision. I went with my own team, just like maybe Louis van Gaal went with his team or José Mourinho took his team. They were the decisions you had to make and I made that decision. But Mick’s a good guy. I have known Mick a long time.
