Manchester United fans will have enjoyed Sporting Lisbon’s 4-1 thrashing of local rivals Manchester City in the Champions League last night. Incoming manager, Ruben Amorim, dished an embarrassing blow to Pep Guardiola, with his side suffering their third defeat on the bounce.
After taking an early lead, with Liam Gallagher, who was bizarrely commentating on TNT’s airing, repeatedly stating his surprise at how “easy” the game was for the blues, Sporting came back with four goals to move to second-place in the Champions League table.
Reported by PortuGOAL, Amorim reflected on the win.
Tonight it was written that it had to be like this. In the first half we didn’t play well, City missed chances, but the goal settled us. Then in the second half, first play, goal. Second play, penalty. They missed a penalty. It was written it had to be like that.
Will I read the English press tomorrow? No. It will be like when I came to Sporting. I won’t read any press for six months. I know what they’re like. To work without distractions, I won’t be looking at what they say.
Amorim had previously been linked to the City job, with reports suggesting that Guardiola is set to leave the club next summer. However, earlier this week, he revealed the only club he was interested in leaving Sporting for was United.
Obviously, it’s something which crossed my mind but I never had any doubt. My decision has been made, that’s the club I want to work for, the context I want to be in, and where I want to continue my career. I didn’t want anything else. It is a decision I thought about but was not undecided about it. I wanted Man United and that’s what I did.
