Following the unveiling of Jadon Sancho yesterday, Manchester United have today announced that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has signed an extension with the club. The new deal lasts three seasons with the option of a further year.
In Solskjaer’s first full year at the club he took us from 6th to 3rd, and then in his second season from 2nd to 3rd. We’ve reached numerous semi-finals and last year a final, but Ole is yet to get his hands on silverware as our manager.
After the announcement, Solskjaer spoke of his desire to lift some trophies.
Everyone knows the feeling I have for this club, and I am delighted to have signed this new contract. It is an exciting time for Manchester United, we have built a squad with a good balance of youth and experienced players that are hungry for success.
I have a fantastic coaching team around me, and we are all ready to take that next step on our journey. Manchester United wants to be winning the biggest and best trophies and that’s what we are all striving for. We have improved, both on and off the pitch, and that will continue over the coming seasons. I can’t wait to get out in front of a packed Old Trafford and get this campaign started.
While the lack of silverware is obviously an issue, and some fans may question why the decision to extend his deal wasn’t made at the end of the coming season when his contract is set to expire, it’s undeniable that the club has made huge strides on and off the pitch from when Solskjaer first arrived.
Ever since day one when I came in, even as a player, I’ve felt the backing on this club. Now of course after I signed the deal to be the manager the first time around we sat down and had a plan and there hasn’t been one moment where I’ve felt I’ve had to look over my shoulder. We have a plan, we stick to it, we know there will be bumps in the road, but now here we are and we want to step forward.
I’m really looking forward to it. The staff are amazing, you look forward to coming into work every morning. I’m an early starter but many of them are already there when I arrive and they challenge each other. It’s a very good working relationship we all have and of course the players have bought into our ideas and I think they’ve shown a great attitude to improve and learn and that’s key. You have to get the buy-in from the players and they are ready now for the next step.
