Manchester United beat Inter Milan in the pre-season tie on Saturday afternoon with Mason Greenwood scoring the winning goal.

After the game, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took time to praise fellow academy graduate Axel Tuanzebe for his impressive display against the Italian club.

Having spent last season out on loan at Aston Villa, making 30 appearances for the club who earned promotion to the Premier League for the campaign ahead, Tuanzebe picked up some great experience. With United yet to sign a central defender, with Harry Maguire a player the club has had two bids rejected for, Solskjaer reckons Tuanzebe is the future of the club.

He has got a future at Man United, yes, of course he has. Today was the best for him, playing against different opposition.

Against Leeds, we knew he could play at that level and that is why he didn’t play against Leeds. Now, he has showed today that he is very capable at this level. Axel is going to be the future of this club.

Tuanzebe is only 21 and so shouldn’t be expected to get a starting position in United’s back four next season but it appears as though Solskjaer is considering keeping the defender in the squad instead of sending him out on loan again.

The defender has been at United since he was eight and signed a new contract with the club earlier this month.

I have spent so long in Manchester that I now regard the city and the club as my home and I’m extremely happy to continue my career here. The manager has shown great faith in me and I can’t wait to get this campaign started under him. We know that we all have to work hard and that started on day one of pre-season. I will be doing everything I can to help us perform the way we need to, this season and beyond. I also want to thank my family for the trust they have in me and God for the opportunity he has given me.
