Remember when…
Manchester United were playing Wolfburg in the final game of the Champions League group stage. We had to win to guarantee our place in the knock out rounds.
With 20 minutes remaining, and the scoreline at 2-1 to Wolfsburg, Louis van Gaal took off Juan Mata and replaced him with Nick Powell. Not quite as remarkable, but replacing the captain of the German World Cup winning side, Bastian Schweinsteiger, with Michael Carrick, also didn’t go down particularly well.
Less than two months later, Powell is playing for Championship side, Hull.
