Steven Gerrard stuck two fingers up at Andre Marriner last night following the referee’s decision to book him. The Liverpool captain tackled James McCarthy from behind, performing one of his famed scissor tackles on his opponent after 81 minutes.
It was a frustrating evening for Liverpool, who failed to muster even one shot on target against Wigan, who are fighting for survival and have conceded 53 goals already this season. If other teams win their games in hand, Liverpool could move down to 8th.
Both Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres played for the whole game but failed to make an impact.
When you consider Cristiano Ronaldo has been booked for sarcastically applauding a referee’s decision before, whilst Wayne Rooney was given a second yellow and sent off for the same offence, it is bemusing as to how Stevie Me got away with sticking his fingers up at the ref.
Then again, this is the player who told referee Mark Clattenburg to send off Tony Hibbert in the Merseyside derby not long ago, so maybe it’s not too surprising he can get away with murder.
