The obvious candidates are Rooney and RVP, for so many reasons.

They both take great penalties. Both are well used to the pressure of needing to score. Both are likely Golden Boot contenders. Every goal a striker scores, boosts his confidence in front of goal. Strikers need to avoid barren spells (esp Rooney)

Thinking 'out of the box', with regard to the open nature of this thread, I'd suggest Rafael.

He has the power, the ball-striking, the audacity and verve. He wants to score goals. Were he to have a high scoring-rate taking penalties, I believe it would immeasurably aid his transition into a world-class wing-back.

Talking of rafael....
Take a look at what the old scot had to say regarding his contribution so far this season
And how much a player he can become in a near future if he keeps going at the rate he's at at the minute, and how fucking improvements has made since joining the club together with his twin brother who's currently enjoring a torrid spell at QPR due to injuries and his current teams bad form: http://t.co/L67ZE9NJ

Simple, RVP

I agree with RVP . But yesterday , his first game against his old club, I think it was right for Rooney to take it. Maybe it was pre agreed between him and Rooney.

Carick was one time recommended by Ferguson in the absence of ronaldo... I think I'll go with the boss's initial choice.

It should stay with Rooney. He needs to practice them more, get a better technique, but why not? Penalties are a crap shoot; it's possible that his replacement would miss as many anyway. No, penalties are your job, Rooney, and we expect you to deliver.

ME. I'm fucking gold from the spot. Fergie Fergie, sign me up!

PS: Rooney is on 65% for what's described as a 90% success rate activity. NEXT!

Rooney is pretty shit at penalties. Look at the stats. He scores fewer than the average penalty taker.

Denis Irwin.

Failing that, Giggsy, then RVP, then Roo.

sorry but... November 4, 2012
just checked rvp peno stats from last few seasons, and looks as though he was not top choice always for arsenal and missed one in 3 often

Roo has missed 3 recently. That is just not good enough.

For me it has to be RVP or Giggs on form.

If it is a shoot out. I'd add Rooney, Valencia, Nani, Carrick. All cool as cucumbers ;)

Question: Did Wilshire get a second yellow, or a straight Red?

Guardian play by pay assumed it was a second Y, but stated, if could have been a straight red.

But ESPN time line list only 3 Y for Arsenal and 1 R, no indication of a Y at the time of the R.

Who has a link that can unequivocally clear this up. Maybe the FA?

There are not many penalty takers these days who try to send the keeper the wrong way. Most now just hit it as accurate as possible. By now all of us know Rooney favours the keepers bottom right corner.

You all might not know it, but Büttner took all the spot kicks AND pens for his former team.

Shades of Denis Irwin? Guess that will be something to watch how it develops.

Anyone have an answer to the Wilshere question. second yellow or straight red????

I'd like to see Carrick have a go. Composed, can hit a ball well with the side foot, experienced. Why not?

Carrick had a go before. He hit a totally shit one vs. Burney a few years back that cost us points and put him off the list indefinitely!

Well said Fibes - Denis Irwin was pure quality. Proves it's not about being a striker. Though the amazing Eric Cantona was just as good. In those days a pen for us equalled a goal basically. A penalty taker needs to have a cool head and maybe need to enjoy the battle of wits with the keeper. Eric certainly did. Eric and Denis, as good as Eric and Ernie. Maybe the present lot should watch them at it.

While some are mentioning Irwin, cantona.. Bruce holds record for most pens scored 4 us in a seaon.. 11..He may not have looked the most flashy but he could put em away
Right now though has to be RVP

Carrick. He is by far my first choice.

I would love Giggs to be the second choice, but he does not need the confidence from the goals.

Between Rooney and RvP, it depends on the situation. When we are trailing, against any opposition other than Arsenal, I would prefer RvP.

If we are in front or level, I would prefer Rooney. Because the confidence from scoring a goal would make Rooney unplayable.

To be honest, I've never rated Rooney as PK taker, even more so I think Nani is a safer option. But now we have RvP, so there shouldn't be any question about it anymore.

Gotta be someone who's a guaranteed starter so I don't even know why Nani's names is in the poll. The lad who's shit decision making cost us the league cup, who's taking the piss over his contract, may not be with us next season, and is not even in the first team, he should be our penalty taker?

How's this gonna work? We just make sure we only get penalties in the 10 odd games he'll play this season? We're 15 odd games in and have had 4 pens plus at least 2 big shouts. That's more than 1 in 3 matches, so once again it has to be a starter.

RVP first, then anyone else who's got the guts. Rafa's an interesting shout as he's got some massive cojones.

As much as it pains me to say it; Lumplard is probably the best pen tekker in the league, and Le Tissier Tissue the best in top flight history.

I cant remember ever seeing michael carrick take a penalty. But his technique should fit that task perfectly: he hits the ball really crisply, and accurately. Plus hes in the team [unlike scholes and giggs]. You need to have consistency, hence a first teamer
