Ahead of the season, lots of pundits, journalists and retired footballers had Manchester United down for a 3rd or 4th placed finish this season, predicting the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City to finish above us.

Half way through the season, United are top of the league having played fewer games than the title rivals below them.

Tony Pulis reckons that Sir Alex Ferguson, one of the greatest managers of all time, will be smiling when he looks at the league table.

“He’ll be smiling, looking at the table and everyone who wrote them off,” said Pulis. “He has been one of the great managers, if not the greatest. And if I had the team he’s got, I wouldn’t want to retire! Those players that came through were just an exceptional crop. You look and see he’s still got Neville, Scholes and Giggs in that squad. They’re exceptional.”
