After weeks of getting our hopes up that it might just be possible for Sergio Ramos to sign for Manchester United, reports from Spain ended the dream. Florentino Perez is determined to keep Ramos at all costs, after facing the backlash for the way Iker Casillas left the club. His departure, particularly without a world class replacement (ahem, De Gea), hasn’t gone down well.
Ramos felt as though he wasn’t appreciated enough at Real Madrid and didn’t have a great relationship with Perez. However, as vice-captain, and now captain because of Casillas’ departure, he’s a lot more valuable to Perez.
Perez flew to China ahead of the squad to have talks with Ramos and his brother, Rene, and Marca immediately reported that a deal had been agreed, with Ramos feeling appreciated.
However, today, Cadena SER, Spain’s premier radio network, has denied these claims. They say that no deal has been agreed and Ramos is still interested in leaving Real Madrid for United. They also said that Ramos wasn’t impressed that Marca reported he had agreed a deal until 2020, when they just wasn’t the case. They also claimed that Perez told Ramos: “You’re unsellable because if you go then I’d have to go as well.” They also claim that Perez told the brothers that there would be no cut price deal, that any club would have to pay the €180m release clause, despite him only having two years left remaining on his deal.
United’s last interaction with the player was to tell him he needed to make his desire to leave public. Ramos obviously has the fear that he could do that, Perez still refuses to sell, and he has to see out next season with an angry crowd watching him.
