Spain seemingly has an obsession with Cristiano Ronaldo’s relationship with Gareth Bale, or lack of, and ahead of Real Madrid’s match against Roma, the former United winger has snapped. Trying to explain that footballers don’t need to be best mates with each other, Ronaldo claims he wasn’t friends with Rio Ferdinand, Ryan Giggs or Paul Scholes.
On the field we fought for the best interests of the team. The hugs and kisses don’t count for anything. It’s not better for Bale to come to my house for dinner or eat something at his. We’re all professionals.
At Manchester United I won the Champions League and I didn’t speak with Ferdinand, Giggs or Scholes. We said hello to each other and that was it.
Ferdinand, working as a pundit during Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat against PSG, has laughed off Ronaldo’s claim.
“He’s gone off me!” Rio joked. “He used to live next door to me. Unbelievable. He didn’t like my cooking!”
