Manchester United have scored 88 goals in 2018. Some of them great, some of them good, some necessary, some meaningless, but there have been a few that have stood out, either for their quality or importance. Some goals tick both boxes.
So, which goal was our best of 2018?
Runner up: Marcus Rashford vs Liverpool
Earlier this year, United beat Liverpool 2-1 at Old Trafford, with Rashford scoring both goals against our hated rivals. The first, and better of the two, came from David de Gea playing a brilliant ball to Romelu Lukaku. Our Belgian striker headed the ball on to Rashford. From a tight angle, the only player standing between Rashford and the goal was Liverpool academy graduate Trent Alexander-Arnold. With one quick turn, the defender was taken out of the game, before Rashford found the bottom corner with a precision shot. Lifelong red scoring a great goal against the scousers? Yeh, that’ll do.
Winner: Nemanja Matic vs Crystal Palace
With almost an hour played, United were two goals down against Palace. If United lost, we would fall to third in the table, while Liverpool leapfrogged us in to second place.
Chris Smalling pulled one back, before Lukaku equalised with 15 minutes left to play. Then, in injury time, the ball fell to Matic 25 yards out. The midfielder hit the ball so sweetly, leaving goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey with no chance. United won the game and stayed second, a position we held on to until the end of the season.
