Wayne Rooney started United’s Champions League quarter-finals against Chelsea with a bang, putting us 1-0 up with less than 25 minutes played. A great spot from Carrick to find Giggs, a wonderful first touch from Giggs to beat his man, before Rooney opened his body up perfectly to slot the ball past Cech.
Nobody could have predicted that we would go on to score a further six goals against Arsenal that afternoon, but the goal of the day was Ashley Young‘s, as he put us 2-0 up with this curler in the top corner.
In terms of quality and importance, it’s hard to think of many goals in Sir Alex Ferguson’s time when a player could claim to match Wayne Rooney‘s winner against City last season. It was a brilliant goal to shut up our noisy neighbours and certainly one of the best we’ve seen at Old Trafford for years.
United went in 2-0 down at half-time against City in the Community Shield. Following a goal from Chris Smalling, Nani put us on level terms with less than an hour played with a lovely finish from a great team goal, where our passing ripped the blues’ defence apart.
Winner: Rooney vs City
