Sergio Romero has played in goal for all of Manchester United’s games this season, following Louis van Gaal’s assertion that David de Gea isn’t focussed thanks to the transfer talk relating to Real Madrid. The manager has claimed that De Gea may return to the first team once the transfer window closes. Despite this, knowing that he will almost certainly lose his starting position in the team, Romero has claimed he hopes that De Gea stays.

The truth is that I have no idea. But for me I hope that De Gea stays here because he’s a good team-mate who always works hard and that is best for the group. He works hard every day. The truth is he is a great team-mate, a great professional, a great person. It happened to me last year in Sampdoria. I was not playing but I was working as if I was going to play. It surely is a difficult situation for him but when one is a great professional like he is and one has a good head like his you keep training to get better day by day because you never know he could play.
