Wayne Rooney scored a goal that was worthy of winning any football game today, with an overhead kick on the volley which he fired in to the top corner, leaving Joe Hart rooted to the spot.
He’s scored some great goals in his time at the club, like the volleys against Newcastle and Middlesbrough, as well as that chip against Pompey, but when asked if he thought this was the best of his career he replied: “I think so. I saw it come into the box and thought ‘why not?’ Thankfully it finished up in the top corner. I was trying to get in a good position for when Nani crossed it. Nine time out of 10 they go over the crossbar. Today it ended up in the top corner. It is instinct. You don’t have time to think about it.”
Rooney was also asked when the last time he scored an overhead kick was, with fans racking their brains to remember if he’d done it in a United shirt.
“In school I think,” he said. “It’s the first one since I started playing professionally.”
Whilst City scored today, after Dzeko scuffed his shot in to Villa’s arse which deflected it in to the goal, Rooney says United did enough today to deserve the win.
“It is important for the league after dropping three points last week,” said Rooney. “It is also a big game for the whole city. City have been closer to us this year and I thought it was a close game. We just created better chances and deserved to win. It is three points, we’re top of the league and we’re grateful for that. I wasn’t too pleased with my overall performance today but I got a chance and thankfully managed to take it.”
