Whilst Sir Alex Ferguson appears to disagree at times, winning the Premiership has to be the priority for Manchester United. Prove you’re the best side in England before you venture further afield, winning European titles.

Before Liverpool got thrashed by Chelsea in the Champions League, Fernando Torres, echoing the sentiment of many foreign players, claimed winning in Europe was more important than the Premiership.

Wayne Rooney has today claimed that regardless of what else we achieve, if we don’t retain the league title this season, it will be a failure.

“When you win the league, you know it will be even more disappointing the next season if you don’t win it again,” Rooney said. “You’ve already proved you’re good enough to do it, so you can’t see it as anything but a failure if you don’t retain the trophy. The history of the club demands we continue winning, and the manager demands we continue winning.”
