Ahead of Manchester United’s game against Fenerbahce this evening, Robin van Persie has claimed that he could have been on our team this evening, with his plan in 2012 to stay at the club for several years.

As it was, Sir Alex Ferguson retired at the end of Van Persie’s first season and Louis van Gaal sold the striker at the end of his first season in charge.

We will never know. It could have been that I could have been a player for Manchester United today. When I signed that was the idea, that Sir Alex would stay on for a few more years, but in football things change, you can’t plan your own path or your coach’s path. In this world you have to deal with how it comes.

Fenerbahce are currently ninth in the Turkish league and Van Persie has conceded this evening’s game will be a difficult one for his team.

It will be tough for us. United are the favourites, but you never know what will happen.
