Reports this evening have claimed that Alexis Sanchez is following Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan. The Chilean has agreed a deal on loan for the season ahead.
Sanchez will go down as one of the worst signings in Manchester United’s history, largely because of the huge salary that he has earned since moving from Arsenal in January 2018. Inter will not be paying all of his salary on loan, with United subsidising his wages. The European transfer window closes on Monday and it is expected for the deal to be confirmed soon.
Many United fans don’t have an issue with Lukaku or Sanchez leaving the club, given their poor form last season, but the decision to allow two forwards to leave the club without replacing them raises a few question marks. Coupled with the fact Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini also left Old Trafford with neither being replaced, it feels as though Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is being set up to fail.
Sanchez’s highlight reel at United is relatively short. He scored against former club Arsenal in the FA Cup to knock them out of the competition, as well as injury time winner against Newcastle after we had gone 2-0 down. The most important moment of his United career was at the Etihad in his first season when he set up all three of our goals in a comeback that denied City from winning the league against us.
But when you look at how much he cost and how little he produced for us, he continues the long line of disappointments to wear the no.7 shirt after Cristiano Ronaldo left for Real Madrid.
Now we get to look forward to the inevitable of Sanchez assisting a load of goals for Lukaku in Serie A this season. Can’t wait.
