I hope he does better job than Ronaldo and Tevez but not 7 shirt. I think he hasn't got da ability to take dat responsibility.

Still need another striker and a midfielder due to Hargos persistent injury problems.

Best, Robson, Cantona, Beckham, Ronaldo.

Valencia?

Those five guys were unique in their own kind. To give Valencia the 7 is to set him up for failure - he couldn't outdo Ronaldo in attacking talent.

It's a hard act to follow. I say, give the 7 to someone who's talented, but would also stay at United for a bloody long time, and be loyal.

Macheda in a few years, maybe. If Nani steps up bigtime, and walks out of Ronaldo's shadow - then Nani.

This is too much, too soon. I'm still trying to get myself excited that we signed him. Why am I not excited about his signing?

Well if Valencia's price was 16 mills we now have 64 mills left from the Ron sale. Fergie will most likely bring in another striker and I do agree with Kings, we need a midfielder because of Hargo's constant injuries. We can't depend on him until he finishes his recovery and can stay fit for some time. Nobody seems to know when that will be.

Anyways, so I stay on topic - when are the numbers published for next season?

I would give it to Fletcher. If not him, then i would leave it vacant for a year or so.

Valencia is a really good player. But i wouldnt want him to wear the number 7. The comparison between him and Ronaldo would always be mentioned and if he doesn't succeed he will be remembered as the number 7 flop. The number 7 should be worn by someone who is young and has potential. Maybe that Serbian kid that's coming on January?

Darren Fletcher is an outstanding big match player, and he was the exception to the 2008-09 rule of, "let's go missing during big games, and see what we can still win".

Eg, dippers home and away, champions league final, Inter home and away (home: we played crap, away: we scored nothing), Porto home, Arsenal away, Fulham away (rebound), and even the Super Cup final against ZSP.

Guys just a thought ........... but wouldn't it be nice to give it to Welbeck.........it would be a great show of confidence in him and it might just propel him on to the next Level ..........also there is no danger of him leaving.

How can you give the 7 to anyone who isn't a guaranteed starter? You're gonna give the 7 to some guy who might be a sub every match? Wait til you sign Aguero and give it to him, or just hold it til u get a real replacement. I am not convinced that Valencia is even a step up from the wingers already on the team, and I havent seen anything from Valencia the last 2-3 years to suggest that he's good enough for United, especially to replace Ronaldo.

Keith - Mate , You should remember that when Ronaldo came to United he was not a sure starter . If Sir Alex has faith in them and trusts them to play well next season i cant see any reason why we cant give it to lads like Welbeck , Macheda and Petrucci (although he might not be involved next season)

grt talent but i dont think whether he deserves No.7.
may be furgason should buy Mattias Fanandez and try to tranforms him the way he did to Ronaldo, otherwise Nani has something.

If Benzema is joining then give it to him. I will defend Valencia and say that most people doubted that floppy haired blonde and then the spotty portuguese kid could take over the shirt. But we all remember Becks and Ronaldo... I have faith in Valencia, even in the 7 shirt.

The Lyon kid, PJANIC, has got me thinking about Benz. Surely not? £38 mill is a good fee too. Can't wait to find out that it's true.

Don't know where all this new people came from but it seems the most exciting times for the "fans" are the transfer windows.

Number 7 ? Don't care. Give it to Park.

For those who suggested Macheda, do we know for sure he will stay at United? I am not gonna say who should get the 7 shirt till the end of the transfer window. Adem Ljijac in January is worth a punt though.

At the end of the day its just a number. I don't give a shit what number he gets as long as he does a good job. We had all this bollox when carrick took keane's shirt and while carrick will never be Roy Keane we won the league that year and he has won it every year since...lets hope its the same for Valencia with the no 7...and long reign Wayne Rooney!

I'm still on the Ribery bandwagon... U never know maybe Sir Alex will use his powers of persuasion!! The opportunity to tAke up the mantle of no.7 shirt is surely too much for Ribery to resist!!

I'm not givig up on this one! Very unlikely I know but there's always a chance when Sir Alex is determined!

Lets consider the fact that when ronaldo came in, every1 raised questions about why he was given the number 7....but look where he ended up!!

The ideology of being given the number 7 will probs enable Valenica to feel obliged to put extra effort into his game in order to prove his worth of being given the shirt.

However, a lyon spokesman has stated that manutd are on verge of a benzema deal - i'd rather see him wear the no.7 than valencia. Yet rumours are mounting that sergio aguero is on his way to OT, and i'd rather see him being given the shirt than both the pair.

It's just a number, even if it's been worn by Cantona, Best etc.
I wouldn't mind even if it was given to VDS.

No way we're going for Ribery now we've signed Valencia. I'm gonna give him till January before I judge him too much. No doubting his pace and power will be an asset in Ronnie's absence but still not convinced he has the overall quality to play our fast paced one touch passing...

I agree with Kings, we need a striker with pace (Benzema is the only one that fits the bill and is realistic), and a defensive midfielder is absolutely vital. Hargreaves is done and dusted, we should look for the insurance on him asap!! Not sure who we could go for though, apparently there is a Croatian or Serbian dude (Kakar??) who is the nuts that we have looked strongly at, but I've never seen him play.

I'm convinced no. 7 could go to Benzema if we get him, or Llajic in Jan.

Not Welbeck, he's shit - he'll never be a premier league striker.

Number 7 would be perfect for Aguero if he joined and if he wasnt from Argentina.

I think Valenca will get it unless we get Benzema, SAF gnna make him a world class player hopefully.

Ancellotti doesnt want Joe Cole? Love it if he joined United.

I think at a push it might be worth giving him a go with number 7 just to give him a bit of confidents, but i would prefer if it went to someone else

666rbr - Bale is Welsh. I think United are in reasonable shape now. I think we need an out and out front player to feed off Rooney and Berbatov, and macheda and welbeck can provide the back up. That's it really, although Fergie should possibly think about the way Xavi and Iniesta took the piss out of us and think about that type of player lining up for the reds next season.

Slightly off topic, I think we should go for Benzema and Rodwell. Rodwell is just 18 but could provide good cover in midfield. He's big so could be a top centre back in the future, and he's English.
Back to Valencia,I don't think he should get No.7. I think it should go to Nani,Tosic or Benzema were we to sign him. Welbeck could be a good shout too.

Not Valencia. That's for sure.

I dont think Anderson's the person for the legendary number. He just cant score, which is a significant quality of all who wears the No.7 jersey.

If we are closing in on Benzema it seems more likely that it will go to him: a French striker who might make the stages like Cantona. However, if I were to pick someone to get the number, it is Fletcher. Now that he is mature and no longer the understudy of Beckham years ago, he is good enough to bear the number, which will reflect his significance to the team's play.

not valencia for sure,,it will give bad effect in the future if we handover that number to valencia..he aint number 7 class, yet...he should be pacey, equipped wiv shitload of flair, and got charisma just like becks, ronnie , best...its a trademark for us..benzema will be handed that number next week..anyone remember jeremy menez from as roma?he could be our left winger,,he should have moved to us rather than roma...hes got potential and very versatile player..

Cristiano was a talented teenager when he got the number 7 jersey. If Ferguson sees the same potential, Valencia should wear it.

I have always thought the 7-jersey is for wingers. Benzema is a striker and I do not think he has enough talent even for ManUtd squad-player.

the no 7 shirt should be given to a teenager with talent and he must be made to play the manchester style...
presently two best options are ladjjic or welbeck

now signing benzema and valencia will reduce the 80 m to 30 m..
we must and must strengthen the midfield and i hope fergie willl do that
we must bring experience and power to midfield....try to sign silva or degastino or snieder....
