Ahead of the official confirmation that Phil Jones had signed for Manchester United, Chris Smalling claimed he was very pleased to hear that he was on his way.
The defensive pairing put in a good performance for the England U-21s last night in their 1-1 draw with Spain.
Smalling is 21-years-old whilst Jones is only 19, meaning that potentially we have our defence sorted for the next decade or more, something which Chris hopes for.
“It’s brilliant [that Jones seems destined for United],” said Smalling. “I’ve really enjoyed playing with him and it’s hard to think he’s only 19. Phil and I have been pretty good together for many games now. It’s been disappointing that Micah’s not been able to come [to the European Under-21 Championship] but Phil’s come in and done really well and we’ve been able to set our stall out. Hopefully we can play together for a few years.”
