Louis van Gaal has confirmed today that Rafael da Silva is out for the rest of the season, after breaking his ribs when playing for the U-21s as part of his rehabilitation.

This season, he has been in the match day squad just 18 times from a possible 39 in all competitions. He has played the full 90 minutes on just five occasions, the last of those in the 1-1 draw against Chelsea at Old Trafford. He has started a further two games, and has been subbed on once, for the last five minutes for our win over Spurs last month. The game against Spurs, on March 15th, was his last appearance. His last game before that was in the FA Cup game against Yeovil on January 4th.

In the past three season, Rafael has suffered from 15 injures.
