All I'm saying is that they did have their moments, as shown in the link to the video I posted. Wayne's play has also evolved from back then and he has admitted to preferring to play in a more withdrawn role where he can dictate the play, a bit like old-Scholes.
Besides, many are drooling over Wayne and Chicharito's pairing, but most of the latter's goals have been "Ruudesque" if I may label them this way, the majority of them coming from great positioning rather than from the use of pace.

Hmm. just noticed that if you replace Schalke with Leverkuzen (both German sides by the way), these are the same semi final pairs with the 01-02 season. Hopefully we will get past the Germans this time, but the other tie could have a similar result with 2002. Real dumping Barca out.

Leverkusen were surely a better team than this Schalke side. It took a Zidane wonder goal to decide the 02 final. It's the ideal semi final but I remember thinking the same thing last season. What a draw, I thought - Bayern, then Lyon.

Real could dump Barca out. It'll be interesting to see the league and cup final in the next week, see if Real have bridged the gap.

We can't underestimate Schalke, but I don't think they're as good as the Dortmund and Leverkusen sides we played in the past. Lets not forget, Dortmund won the bloody thing and Leverkusen scared the pants off Madrid in the final. It's all about us really IMO. We approach these two games with right attitude, we'll reach the final. The manager won't make the same mistakes again.

There are no easy games when you want to win. That much is a given. So we need 100% against Schalke, both legs. And we need 100% in every other game. And if we don't get it we might lose. But that's the challenge right there, bring everything to every game.

The title is not won, the FA Cup is not won, Europe is certainly not won.

The league and FA Cup one might say are an exercise in concentration of us, we win those if we don't fuck up. The champions league, against Barca or Real? We're going to need something special, or we need them to not show up.

Congrats Scott the Red, the FA should be openly ridiculed at every given opportunity. Studs Up is always hilarious, good to see them addressing the Hypocrisy at the FA. Hardly the most democratic of institutions, so taking the piss should be seen as doing ones duty!

A few Strips ripping "senior figures" within the FA wouldn't go amiss either. Name and Shame!!!

After another dumb ass response (likely you all received the same one) from the FA requested of them:-

"Can you please provide clear and concise rules which govern this issue? Must admit I am baffled - or are you just showing bias toward one club.
Now please be honest, transparent and clear with your reply because this repsonse does display an unfair bias!
Does the football supporting public have to take this to The Ombudsman, Fairness Commission, Local MP's, The PM, FIFA or UEFA.

I dont know whether this schalke team is better or not than leverkusen or any other team but i what i surely know is that this is the most hardworking united side i have ever seen.Its even better than the 07-08 season where won the double with ronnie and co.
Now i completely agree with dog house we have to give 100% in every game irrespective of the opponents or the tournaments in which we are playing.I know many non united fans and even some united fans would not believing that we will win the champion league.Its their opinion but i still BELIEVE WE CAN.
The current united team looks like the inter of last season.I loved the way inter worked so hard under mourinho(who is a class by the way) and won trophies last season.
We have to take one game at a time and hope for 100%from our players.But whatever maybe the result at the end of the season i have to say i am proud of my players and i am very much proud that i support the best club in the world.

Studs up is absolute quality. Totally irreverant and non PC. I wonder which club the dude supports? He regularly takes the piss out of 'pool (rafa), spurs (their fans), arse(wenger) and shitty (tevez). Wouldnt be suprised if he was a utd fan...but maybe, horror of horrors, he is a geordie or a rentboy?

It's interesting to see a pleasant change in fellow RoM-ers attitude. Last year we were getting a bit cocky about "surely beating Bayern over 2 legs" and payback in the final. This year, we are rightly being more circumspect and taking each game as it comes, not daring to jinx it. I like it!

@Jeet, That is what defeat in the unlikeliest of circumstances can do even to fans. We were coasting in both games against Bayern and still lost the tie due to stupid mistakes (Evra at the Allianz and Rafa at OT). It is obvious even the most die-hard fans (like most people here at ROM) will be cynical after matches like those.

However, I do not agree with people who say we need either Barca/Real to have an off-day or us to play out of our skins to beat them if we make the final. I mean, that is just not the United way I am afraid. And, yes, I am being realistic here and I know it will be very difficult but to not even give a 50-50 chance to us is being too distrustful of this team and the gaffer who has consistently managed to surprise everyone over the past 26 years.

Germans are always bogey teams for use and have been ever since Dortmund in 97. So, I am sure nobody related to the club will be taking it easy for this tie. Players will treat every match as a cup-tie and it is best for us fans to do the same to constantly have the expectation and enthusiasm and not be disappointed if something does go wrong.

Jeet, I know a lot of fans were cocky about beating Bayern but the fact remains we SHOULD have beat them,and barring a string of bizarre incidents (rooney getting injured, carrick ballsing up and rafa getting hot headed) we were beating them comfortably. The same should be true here, we SHOULD win, but you cant account for things like that!

I agree with you that we also have a chance to beat barca or real madrid.Barca have never won in english soil so th ehistory may continue an they may lose in wembley and as far as real is concerned they are very much beatable.
So i still BELIEVE that we can win the champions league and we shouldnt be afraid of anyone as we are MANCHESTER UNITED.
On other note this year champsleague would be making huge money as the top 3 clubs in the world are still there in the tournament.

Good to see Townsend and Southgate with nowhere to go in terms of critisising UTD both had to admit we deserved to go through, though Townsend had to mention the pen but then surprise couldn't be arsed to recall JT should have had two yellows and been off the pitch at OT.

Just a thing on Nani, how cringing was his rolling around, its a yellow card tackle but...............

@Balaji, agree completely about Barca/Real. Just look at the arsenal game at the emirates - Barca didnt have an off day then, they were just beaten by a team who took it to them in the second half. Obviously we would have to play well to beat either team, but not above and beyond our ability - just to the level we know we are capable of. Its not an average team that drops just two points at home all season. This team can beat anyone, including "the best team in the world, like ever, seriously" barcelona.

@Balaji, PigPhil: Get your drift, my point being that just like players, we should respect every opponent and never say something like "Ohh XXX, we'll beat them easy, no problem". Becuase the things like Carrick ballsing up, Rafa seeing red, etc. all happen, and are part of the sport. If everything panned out true to form/reputation, we would end up like La Liga - a 2 horse race. And even there - Madrid has been beaten. So, respect your opponents, irrespective of reputation (think Crawley Town). I dont agree with statements saying "we should have beaten them" - to me it's almost like Cech saying they were only beaten on penalties. But yes, to Balaji's point around fans saying we can beat Madrid/Barca only if they have an off day, that's where you cross the thin line of respecting opponents to fearing them. I don't subscribe to that either. As you say, that's not the Utd. way. Bottomline, I am a superstitious old maid, and I don't like any show of unhatched chicken counting! I prefer the "quietly confident" style.

@Ash, Yes, people don't give enough credit to the defensive steele of this United side under Sir Alex. If we do make it to the final, it will definitely be a case of unstoppable force against immovable object (to use the old cliche). Because on our day, United have the best defense in European football, of that there can be no doubt and this seasons CL campaign proves as much because we've only conceded 3 goals in entirety.

People always go gung-ho about Barcelon's attacking football and hey, I love it. I have to say that they are the best team in European football right now. But not enough credit is given to the best defense in Europe I am afraid. And that is what annoys me.

Again to do all this first of all we need to beat Schalke and we'll see. But no matter who we meet in the final, the match will start as any match always does - as a 50-50 between two equally matched teams.

As an aside, who would you prefer if we do make it to the final because we have two destinies here. One we can meet Barcelona and get a chance to avenge for 2009. Or we can meet Real Madrid and get a chance to prove to Ronaldo what he's missing and make his life a living hell. Which one would you prefer? Personally, I want to shut up people going hooha about Barca, but that's just me.

@Jeet - you've misunderstood my statement about "should have beaten them" I think. I'm not saying that we deserved the win or anything, just that it has to rank as a huge regret on the players and the fans mind, because after going 3-0 up at home we *should* be able to hold on and beat anyone. Fergie will know we should have been in the semi finals last year, but we weren't, totally through our own doing - you have to learn from these things.

I would want us to face real madrid.I say this becuase that would be a spectacle to watch.Imagine the two biggest football clubs face each other in the final of the biggets european competition.And to add spice to that it will be ronaldos first game against us after joining the facist and that to in wembley.It would be mouth watering tie for any nuetral fan.
Frankly speaking i believe mourinho will agiain knock barca out in the semis.He did with inter and now he will do with real madrid.
But i wont mind us facing barcelona.Whatever if we reach final(i am sure we will)there would be a great clash between 2 footballing giants.

One thing which is in favour of us is that our player are peaking in the right time.Last season we were going downwards during this time.As there are only 12 games to go in this season for us(Provided we reach finals of both the knock out competition) every player will know their role.For ex-Berba would know that his role is to help united win the league as he would be playing the league matches,rio would be just asked to play the important games and he know swhich games he has to feature,Owen Would be asked to be ready as who knows he may be very crucial for our treble dream.
So all in all every player knows his role so it would work in the favour for us.The only thing we should be careful is to avoid being over confident because that's the only thing which can spoil our season.
So I just want all the united fans to cheer the team very much and not criticize becaus ewe also play a very important role in our team's success.I hope we get to see the same kind of support in every game like there was against chelsea this week.

@Bigphil: Got your point. Sorry if I misunderstood you. yes, I agree - that's the right attitude to take, and if the world doesnt give us credit for what this team can achieve, we just have to keep proving them wrong.
@Balaji: I was wondering about your destiny question also. IF we beat Schalke, who would we prefer - Barca or Real? My head says Barca, because of Rome, and because they are the next "fucking perch", but my heart says Madrid. Mourinho vs SAF, Ronnie against Utd in England, and the promise of flowing attacking football, on the biggest stage - it's a heady concoction. I can appreciate what Xavi, Iniesta and Messi do for Barca as individuals, but if I watch their style as a team, I get massively bored.

Anyway, let's focus on the blue cunts now for the weekend! I hope we really do them this time, and always. Last minute winner from Owen will do nicely for me!
