Reports emerged today revealing that Edwin Van der Sar’s wife, Annemarie, suffered a stroke last week and is now seriously ill. Edwin has been at her bed side in Holland as they await test results.
Our goalie hasn’t played since November, ruled out with a knee injury, and has been excused from any further duty for United until more is known about his wife’s condition. The couple have two children, Joe and Lynn.
Depending on the results, fans may have to prepare themselves for Van der Sar’s retirement.
“Annemarie had a problem over in Holland a week ago and has been admitted to hospital,” Ferguson said today. “That is the best place for her to be. They have examined her twice and are trying to get to the root of it. I have told Edwin to stay over there. There is no point in him being here. The best thing is for him to be with his wife. Hopefully she will make a good recovery.”
