United fans are hated for their arrogance, so singing “three nil in your cup final” when beating a weaker opposition is never going to endear this country to us. However, United will have every right to sing such a chant tonight at Old Trafford, following the comments of Sporting’s Joao Moutinho.
“For us the match at Old Trafford is a final,” he said. “In Lisbon we did not deserve to get beat, the match should have been a draw and now we need to take our chances for revenge in England.”
A defeat tonight could see Sporting’s chances of progressing to the next round ruled out, with the Portugese club chasing Roma for the second qualification spot. United were victorious in Portugal due to a Ronaldo goal, which he celebrated modestly out of respect for his former club, but the club from where Ronaldo and Nani were signed will be eager to leave with the three points tonight.
How important is it for United to win tonight?
