Manchester United have confirmed this afternoon that Mason Greenwood will not return to training or play in any matches until further notice.

This news follows allegations made by Greenwood’s ex-girlfriend, Harriet Robson, that the player had assaulted her. Taking to social media, she revealed pictures of bruises, a bleeding lip, and most shocking of all, an audio clip which implies Greenwood had raped her.

An hour after United confirmed he had been suspended, Greater Manchester Police confirmed that a man in his 20s has been arrested on suspicion of rape assault. He remains in custody for questioning.

Earlier today, the club confirmed they were aware of the allegations but would establish facts before commenting further.

We are aware of images and allegations circulating on social media. We will not make any further comment until the facts have been established. Manchester United does not condone violence of any kind.

Nike, who sponsor Greenwood, also released a statement to reiterate concern.

We are deeply concerned by the disturbing allegations and will continue to closely monitor the situation.

The GMP have confirmed that they are making enquiries in to the allegations.

Greater Manchester Police is aware of images and videos circulating on social media. Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.

Greenwood and Robson initially started their relationship when they were at school, with both attending Ashton on Mersey in Sale, the school all academy players go to. Robson’s father has spoken to The Daily Mail and revealed that his daughter didn’t make the content public herself but that someone had hacked in to her phone.

It is dreadful. I’m just coming to terms with it all. As a father you don’t want to know things like that happening to your daughter. The police have been round and she has made a statement to them. She has told us her phone has been hacked. We told her to take it down, which she has done but it’s out there now so it is too late. She is devastated because she didn’t want it released. We have known him since the under 21s. He has been part of our family for two or three years. She is completely devastated by it all.
