Manchester United’s U-18 side thrashed Liverpool 9-1 on Saturday afternoon, with James Scanlon putting his side ahead with less than a minute on the clock. Ethan Wheatley scored moments later before mimicking Wayne Rooney’s boxing knockout celebration from 2015.

In the last meeting between the two sides, where United won 4-3, Wheatley was punched and elbowed by Luca Furnell-Gill. The incident was missed by the referee but the Liverpool defender was later handed a three-match ban for the attack after admitting the charge.
Keen to rub salt in the wounds, Wheatley claimed his hattrick 10 minutes in to the second half, with goals also coming from Ethan Williams, Gabriele Biancheri (2) and Ashton Missin.
With the senior team set to face Liverpool tomorrow, following the recent 4-3 victory against them in the FA Cup at Old Trafford a few weeks ago, they can be encouraged by the strong performance from the youngsters.
The U-18s currently sit top of the league table, 13 points clear of second placed Manchester City, and 25 points clear of Liverpool, who moved down to fourth place after today’s results.
United’s U-18s also faced Liverpool this afternoon and enjoyed a similarly impressive day out, beating the scousers 5-1.
