Manchester United are on the brink of making history by finishing in their lowest top-flight position since finishing 21st in the 1973/74 season, a year that saw the drop down to the old Second Division. The side currently sits in 15th position, but could remarkably still enjoy European glory and Champions League football next season.
According to the top licensed UK bookmakers and betting sites not on Gamstop, United are the current favourite for the Europa League after an impressive 0-3 win away to Athletic Bilbao. Sports betting expert Toby Tustin-Durant explains that Manchester United fans can find competitive odds for their side to progress from the return leg of the semi-final and overcome either Tottenham Hotspur or Bodo Glimt in the final.
Tottenham head to Norway with a 3-1 advantage and look likely to meet their Premier League rivals in Bilbao on May 21st. Incredibly, Tottenham sit one place below Manchester United in the Premier League under the hapless stewardship of Ange Postecoglou, and both teams will be desperate for the opportunity to play in Europe again next season.
Not only will the Europa League winners earn more money, but they will also gain automatic qualification to the 2025/26 Champions League and the millions it brings. Both teams are in need of a rebuild, and being able to attract the best players will be aided by the money made from Europe and the opportunity to play in the top club competition on the continent.
Taking on Athletic Bilbao would normally be a daunting task, but a Thursday night under the lights of Old Trafford and a 3-0 cushion should give the team confidence. Another massive boost that the team will have should they reach the final is that they have already played at the San Mamés Stadium.
Everything was set up for Bilbao to make it to the final of the tournament that is being held at their stadium, but Casemiro’s header and a double from Bruno Fernandes shocked everyone. Confidence is key in football, and if Manchester United can go to a familiar stadium where they have recently had a great result, the odds will be in their favour.
Ruben Amorim’s United team has shown brief glimpses of promise, but inconsistency has seen them struggle this season. However, their European journey could be enough to salvage a bad year and put them in a good position for next season. Since taking over in November, United have won just 14 of the 37 games under their Portuguese boss, drawing 13, and losing 10.
It is likely that Amorim will be keen to bring in some new faces, and the club looks certain to let Lindelöf, Erikson, Evans, and Heaton leave after their contracts expire. The good form of Rashford and Antony will be good news if they try to sell the pair, and Champions League qualification will be a massive boost to their finances and draw for potential signings.
