Edwin Van der Sar should have signed for Manchester United in 2001, just two years after Peter Schmeichel left the club, but instead signed for Fulham.
He went on to have a great six years at United later in his career though, signing for us in 2005. He won four Premier League titles, the Champions League and two League Cups.
During Van der Sar’s final game at United, where he was named captain, the fans pleaded with him to stay, singing “one more year” on repeat.
Van der Sar wasn’t swayed though and retired from the game. However, five years later, it has been confirmed that the Dutch goalie will be playing again. He is set to feature for VV Noordwijk, where he spent his youth career before joining Ajax, after their first choice goalie Mustafa Mare Zine was ruled out with an injury.
The club’s technical director, Peter Vink, has confirmed the news today.
He still thinks warmly of the club and is here regularly. After some deliberation, he agreed to keep goal next Saturday against Jodan Boys. We assume that it is basically only for one game. We are thrilled that Edwin wants to help us in this way.
