Louis van Gaal has revealed that the first person he texted was his former understudy, Jose Mourinho, to let him know he had been given the Manchester United job.
Mourinho, who has revealed that it was Van Gaal who taught him the trade, had been desperate to replace Sir Alex Ferguson, but United didn’t even contact him about the job.
“Mourinho congratulated me,” Van Gaal revealed. “He was the first one I texted and he was the first one to text me back. He said he was jealous of my list of clubs. I didn’t call Manchester United, I didn’t call Bayern Munich, they’ve always called me. And I’m proud of that.”
