Robin van Persie has tonight equalled Patrick Kluivert’s record for Holland and joined him as the country’s top scorer with 40 goals.
Van Persie, who is his nation’s captain, put Holland 1-0 up against Hungary after quarter of an hour and then made it 4-0 just before half-time. Kluivert, who joined the coaching staff last year, was on the sidelines to celebrate.
In the second half, Van Persie completed his hattrick, making him Holland’s top goalscroer.
Klaas-Jan Huntelaar is the only other player in the top 10 who hasn’t retired and he is 7 goals behind Van Persie.
