When Manchester United signed Lisandro Martinez from Ajax there was plenty said about his height. Former Liverpool player, Jamie Carragher, was particularly critical of the Argentinean defender, claiming that his stature would work against him in the Premier League.
But his performances so far this season have won the fans over, with him walking off the field during our recent 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur to chants of “Argentina!”, and teammate Raphael Varane has spoken about how much he enjoys playing alongside him.
I enjoy playing with him. He is a very good player. It is very good for the defence to keep the clean sheet, but [the] teamwork [was] fantastic. I think we could see 11 players in the same tempo, very aggressive, very focused on the game, so it was a great performance.
Talking specifically about the Spurs game, Varane reflected on how the defence performed.
We tried to press very high on the pitch, and it was a very good performance. We cut the connection with the two strikers they had and, especially, we killed the space in behind the defensive line, so it was a good performance. I think it was a very solid [performance], we created a lot of chances. We could have scored more goals, especially in the first half, we had the great chances. I think the pressing was very good and a good tempo, so it was great teamwork tonight.
