I felt unusually confident before this match and never once felt worried we weren't going to win, even when Carroll got the jump on Vidic. It was wonderful to see another Scholes master class, and see Giggsy already get his annual goal. One thing has struck me all through the close season is how focussed and determined all the United players are, and how they are all talking up the merits of their team-mates, whether it's Berba on Chicharito or Giggsy on Rafael da Silva, or everyone saying what a great player Berba is. And they also all look happy to be back, as if itching to 'put the record straight' by winning back the title. There's a kind of cheerful purposefulness about the whole team, which is great to see. All we need is a smile from Valencia. There seems to be a conscious team bonding process going on here, emanating from the players as much as anything, led by example by Scholsey and Giggs, with Gary Nev no doubt pushing his little tache in from time to time. Wasn't it a moment to treasure seeing the pleasure on Scholsey's face when his old friend Ryan volleyed home his chipped pass so carefully for the third goal, all precision and placement. I think the team is very determined to get off to a good start and not let another Burnley happen, like last season. It's interesting that the players pushed most into the press spotlight in the last week or so, Carrick and Owen, didn't actually get on the pitch last night, with Owen not even on the bench, yet both talked the talk perfectly. I'm sure both are very determined to make their contribution, which will surely come. As will a torrent of goals from Wazza, another one with a lovely smile as he stepped out onto the pitch.

So, at least , the season is up and running. Can't wait for the next game, which I'll attend in person, having for once got tickets lined up.

Barba.. was doing great! .. Taking position and holding ball well.. shooting instant ..perfect!

If he is tiny bit better than last year.. he will be absolutely fine! Scholes was pulling the strings once again! What a pass to Giggsy and what a finish! Giggsy what a legend.. knighthood on the way!

The Newcastle defender set it up really well for Berba. :D

The onyl sad note of the afternoon was the fact that Stephen Taylor wasn't playing for Newcastle.

Why on earth has Barton got a tache? Can't take him seriously.

Giles - Great post. Hope you are well. I noticed the team spirit as well. Great to see.

Barton is growing a tache until Newcastle win their first match. I expect he'll end up with handlebars.

Berbatov last season was getting hell not just from a big section of United fans, but also from Bulgaria fans, even though he was the heartbeat of that team. Now that he has retired from Internationals, at least the pressure on him is halved, so hopefully, we will reap the full benefit from his retirement, as we did with Scholes.
