@ king Eric
I don't think that busquets is that good its just the players around him put.him in a team like wigan or some bottom league team he would look very ordinary, whereas masch's play is completely fucked by FSW that he is not able to fit in Barcelona setup, we don't need either of them according to me

As for Gibson as some of you already pointed out he will be better if he has a good run of games under his belt, he Is someone like gnev who needs to be in the team consistently to get going, dont take me wrong I'm just rephrasing what nev said about how consistent game time helped him in early part of his career, n what gibbo should learn from the legend is the will and determination to get better

Gibson may not be a world class talent but he will be an asset to the team if used properly.which I guess our genious manager would definitely do

Kieran Richardson scored a few belters for us, should we re-sign him?
Seriously, Gibson's supporters keep mentioning Flecther as proof that you shouldn't write young players off, because Fletcher is the only one who's done that in Fergie's 25 years here!
Every other player who's come through our ranks and made it as a first team/squad player for us was already producing the goods at 21; Giggs, Butt, G & P Neville, Scholes, Beckham, Brown, O'Shea, Evans, even Wellbeck and Cleverly are showing that they have more about them than Gibson. The young lads who weren't producing the goods at that age have been shown the door, and the only one that has went on to look like a mistake is Shawcross. The rest; Pilkington, Higginbotham, Cooke, Thornley, Beardsmore, Martin, Robins, Ferguson, Healy, Curtis, Bardsley, Richardson, McShane, Simpson, Campbell, Eagles, Ebanks Blake all were not looking good enough for us, and so it has been proved.
Filex4ever mentions Lampard, he mightn't have been world class at 23, but he was good enough to command a 10 million pound transfer fee, over a decade ago. A similar fee in todays market would be more like 30 million, you see someone paying that for Gibson?
And in regards to Fletcher, Fergie rated him enough to have him in our 1st team squad every week at 22/23, and in the team more often than not, Gibson gets in once every couple of months, and this at a time when our midfield is poor, with Hargo injured, Carrick and Fletch bang out of form, Scholes aging and Anderson having spent 8 months with a bust cruciate, and STILL Gibson can't get the nod!

From your own statement i just want to ask you one thing, when every one around him is playing badly how come you expect Gibson to be an awesome player even a certain world class player Mr ambition is looking shit when the others are playing bad, and imo Gibson is not a world class player right now to carry the team on his own, he is just an.inexperienced youngster with very little game time and with potential to become a very good player and for that to happen our team, the manager and the fans has to support him over a period of time

@ancha
2004-2006 United were much worse than now, Rooney and Ronaldo were still different class, you could see how good Rooney was and Ronaldo would be, even though they were still teenagers.
2010, despite being younger than Gibson and playing in a team full of players playing badly, Rafael is still playing out of his skin, already the best right back in the league. Smalling has also out performed Gibson in his performances, despite being younger and playing non league football just 2 years ago. When Gibson was training with World Class players every day, Smalling was trying to avoid dog shit and needles on the training pitch.
Different positions I know, but playing in an underperforming side hasn't affected them too much.
I don't expect Gibson to be awesome, and I would like nothing more than Gibson to shove the words back down my throat and become a great player for us, I just don't see it happening.
I'm not a knocker of Gibson, I try not to knock any United player, but we all have opinions on United and our players, this is simply mine on Gibson. He has shown nothing more than someone like Simpson, Eagles or Richardson did for us, and they were quite clearly not good enough and allowed to leave without too much fuss.
I get that Fergie see's him everyday in training and knows a talented kid when he see's one, but that's not to say that untold thousands of United fans must be wrong.
I'll say again, I'd happily admit I was totally wrong if Gibson comes good, no problem with that at all, I just don't think he has what it takes, and I knew this would be full of people shouting how good he is because he's scored a cracker, as I started my first post by saying, Kieran Richardson banged a few 30 yarders in as well, it didn't mean we should have kept him.

If Gibbo does that on Saturday, even better. On the topic of Mascherano, no thanks, the guy's a fucking nutcase. Not surprised he's on the bench, when you have players in his position - Busquets and Keita - who are much better players.

Got to agree with dazjoe; I don't see Gibson as a first-team player at Utd. Comparisons with Fletcher are absolutely nonsensical, they've completely different attributes and there are very few comparisons between their development, aside from the central midfield role.

Fletcher was and is a work-horse. As a young player looking to break into the first he worked like a Trojan; his attitude, commitment, effort and dedication were second to none (comparable to G Neville). His touch, positional sense and overall contribution was certainly lacking but nobody could question his willingness to be involved and try his damnedest for the team. This hard-work has paid off, for the most part, as he's become a very important player for us, and although he's having a difficult season it's hard to imagine his poor form continuing beyond this season (See Ryan Giggs career with good and bad seasons).

Gibson is very different, he very often hides in games. I've watched on numerous occasions as he's drifted behind players and allowed play to pass him by. As a central midfield player you've got to be constantly showing for the ball, finding space and providing options for you team-mates; that's your role - the link in a chain between defence and attack. Gibson appears happy to let games pass him by and join-in whenever it suits, usually when he sees an opportunity to arrive late at the box's edge. Obviously he's got a decent shot but if you look at the amount of times he shoots compared with the amount of times he finds the net, or even the target, you'll come to the conclusion that most players with a decent shot are capable of a similar success rate.

My opinion is that he offers far too little for a central midfield role at Utd. I think Fletcher makes the cut as our workhorse option, but don't see room for a second player with high fitness levels as a prevailing attribute. You only need look at Cleverly to see a young player showing the kind of promise we're looking for. The lad is up and down the field, involved in as much as he can be, constantly showing for the ball, always looking to help in attack, dropping into defensive positions. I can certainly row-in behind that kind of commitment and say "lets give that lad games, opportunities and support" but I'm just not seeing the same kind of potential in Gibson.

As an Irishman I'd love if Gibson was showing the same promise for club and country but he's not. We've got pretty high standards at Utd and I believe our current midfield falls below those standards considerably; when Darren Fletcher is your best central midfield player there's definitely a problem. That's not taking away from Fletcher but he's the modern-day version of Nicky Butt (Though superior when playing at his true potential). Where's our Bryan Robson / Roy Keane / Paul Scholes / Paddy Crerand? We are Manchester United and although I thoroughly agree with giving Gibson his chance to make an impression, my personal opinion is that, unfortunately, he's not good enough.

Good goal. Fletcher and Gibson comparisons are only similar because they both play in midfield. Fletcher although he worked hard offered little else when he broke into the team and yet he was in the team for a good run of games which he got berated for. Fletchers An opportunity Gibson hasn't had for whatever reason. Agree with Jig3000 in the sense we have no real steel in the centre. Gibson doesn't always look to shoot, he certainly didn't vs Birmingham. However when he is in that position he is our best finisher apart from Scholes and he is likely to get in those positions whereas Carrick and Fletcher panic. When was our last goal from 25 yards plus? Goals like that can sometimes get you out of jail, we don't seem to want to do that anymore. Why because very few in our team can. If Gibson can sort the other side of his game out which will only come by playing matches then we most definetely have a Get Out Of Jail Free Card in the team.

Thing is, he can score those crackers. At any time of the match, and against anyone. But he can also lose grip of the midfield. Anytime, against anyone. Not capable of running the midfield, and that is more important. After all, he is not the only one in the team who can score goals, but playing as one of two central midfielders, he should be able to controll the game better than other players on the pitch.

Would love for him to make it, but haven't seen anything convincing me this season, other than an assist to Berb against Brum, and the odd great goal

Great goal. As we all know, the lad has a hell of a long-range shot on him. Where I get disappointed with him, though, is with his judgment: too often, he takes a shot that doesn't work, when there might have been better options available. Nani had this problem a year or two ago (and still does, sometimes, but at least with him it hasn't become automatic that he will just shoot). And Gibson's all-round game isn't quite up to it yet. But obviously, SAF has faith in him. Like mattbw7 said, I'm hopeful that he will "do a Berba" (or even "do a Nani") and prove his worth.

Another thing that people need to remember, when talking about some of these youngsters who haven't yet proved their worth, is that our normal "opportunity" for them to learn through first-team experience is the Carling Cup. That's usually where they get most of their on-field exposure in the first team, but of course, when we got dumped out of that so early this year, that limits what's available to them. It means they either have to be played in PL, FA or CL matches, or they have to trundle around in the reserves. The PL/FA/CL matches are riskier for us, and they may be out of their depth. But in the reserves, they are out of sight of most of us (which can lead to the notion that they're simply "not good enough"), plus they are not going up against the sort of top quality opposition that they need in order to develop. I know we all deride the Carling Cup (and in truth, it is the least important thing we compete for), yet it's value as a training/learning is greatly underestimated.

Gibbo is a squad player, don't see him ever being much more than that. I know one thing though, United MUST buy a CM in the summer. Don't know why Anderson, isn't get more games. If he's ever to cement a first team spot in the side, then surely he has to be getting more minutes on the pitch, than he is currently receiving.

Also, I keep hearing Gibson is a youngster? He's not a young player anymore. He has to improve other aspects of his game, which I've rarely seen in all honesty.

@willie ... well, he's 23, but he has been around for a while. Made his first senior team appearance way back in 2005 (Carling Cup). Has 50 appearances with us, and 107 including loans spells at Antwerp and Wolves, for a total of 11 goals. At this stage, I can't see him developing into much more than a squad player (though I'm one who believes "squad players" are not only necessary but play an important role for us).

Like you, I do believe we need to bring in a proven CM, though I'm not going to play the "name game". And yeah, I'm also wondering why Ando isn't getting more time.

A Good goal from Gibson, but let's face facts... when he's wearing a United shirt he scores 1 in 10 of those and does little else. Unfortunately, the guy just isn't good enough for us, you can't play central midfield and not put in a tackle, Ok I know Scholesy's been doing that for years but i don't need to list here what other attributes he's used to dominate european football's opposition over the last 15 years.

The game has changed a lot since Keano was in his prime, apart from Essien and Gerrard i can't think of any other top class "box to box" midfielders In the game.

However, I'm not alone in thinking in that without Giggsy and Scholesy in our central midfield we come short - Carrick was great when we first signed him, seems to be in a worrying terminal decline, Fletcher's work rate this season hasn't been matched by his performances and the high standards he's set for himself, Anderson has had some great games this season but he never looks like scoring and only ever plays for 60 mins, Park (when he plays through the middle) has been a solid performer but i think we need to start looking at buying a commanding midfielder who can grab the game by the scruff of the neck and pull the strings.

Maybe Our Mercenary Scouser should play there eventually, taking over from Scholes, and allowing Berbatov and Hernandez to play up front ?

Prove me wrong Gibson, please, but I doubt you will and you'll probably be playing elsewhere this time next season

Honestly, I would be more impressed if you put up a video of him controlling the ball or doing some good one touch passing. We always knew he could shoot, we all call him a one trick pony and he showed that trick again. Don't get me wrong, I would love nothing more than Gibson succeeding because it would mean that teams would have to defend higher to stop the long rangers and then the likes of Nani, Hernandez and Rooney could get in behind. However, he needs to show a much wider range of skills as well as some stamina and drive, all of which are lacking badly in his game. Fergie is giving him chances, which means he has the the ability so its more of a confidence thing.

If he is a one trick pony then that's one hell of a trick.... but still he has to add to his overall game if he wants to stay at United. He never dictates a game... he's not the best at tracking back... he's not the most imposing midfielder.... he just shoots and shoots and shoots.... Now if we combine Andersons power pace and Gibson's shooting ability then we'd have one hell of a player! haha

AGREED - absolutely and completely. Sure, he's inconsistent but he's only going to gain consistency by playing a lot. Even though he's hardly scored for UTD, I think that the rest of the team plays better when he's on the pitch because he drives the team forwards and is very good at controlling the ball, shielding it from opponents.

We all know he can score crackers, its the other aspects of his game that are poor.

And no, he HAS been given ample game time to prove his worth, and apart from his shooting, he has been disappointing.

Tackles, passes, stamina, vision, ability to slow down and accelrate the pace of the game when needed, those are crucial midfield attributes he lacks in varying degrees.

Very simple answer why Anderson isn't getting enough playing time. He's still feeling the effects of his knee injury and said so himself, nothing serious but we as fans will not the whole truth about it. Hence why he's not being pushed because the tail end of the season is important. We missed him towards the end last season and with our medical staff recent track record better safe than sorry. Hopefully that clears stuff up.

Just picked up this from the Guardian ... the quotes from Gibson are old, and Trapattoni is only rehashing what he said last year, but still...

The Republic of Ireland coach, Giovanni Trapattoni, has again told Darron Gibson that he should leave Manchester United to further his career.

Gibson opened the scoring in the 3-0 victory over Wales at the Aviva Stadium on Tuesday, but features only sporadically for his club team.

Trapattoni said: "He can do more. He has a big potential. If I was Gibson I would go to another team where I always play.

"By doing this you can build your mentality. Manchester is Manchester and it is an important club, but sometimes the young players need to play, play and play. It builds confidence."

The comments are especially notable given that Trapattoni made similar remarks about Gibson last year. At that point, the player offered an angry response.

Gibson said in September: "If Trapattoni wants me to move on from a club like Manchester United to better my game, move to somewhere like Stoke where I'll get more games, but have little chance of winning anything, then I just don't know.

"Where else would I go from Manchester United? At what club, other than Manchester United, could I go to improve my game?

"To be honest, if he's trying to say that I should move somewhere like Stoke City and change my game to winning tackles and not winning games, then he's having a laugh. To move on from Manchester United just doesn't make sense to me."

willie ... This was the first time I had seen Gibbo's comments from last year. His comment about Trapattoni wanting him to "change my game to winning tackles and not winning games" was ... er ... interesting. How about changing his game to do both? Or does he think they're mutually exclusive? Interesting too that he seems aware of his own shortcomings in the tackling department.

SatesideAussie - I think Trapattoni is right on this one. You can't improve other areas of your game, if you're sitting on the bench most weeks. Darron has to do whats right for him. If that means, he has to leave, then so be It. If he wants to be a squad player, then he should stay. If he wants to better himself, then he should leave United. If he does go, I wish him nothing, but good luck.

StatesideAussie February 9, 2011
willie ... oh, I would wish him the best too. The crunch time for him will be when Scholes and Giggs retire. That's the challenge for him: to prove he can step and take a regular place, or live with being a squad player. Or go. It seems obvious from his own comments that he sees himself as a "match winner" rather than a "ball winner", but he doesn't do enough to be considered a match winner. He doesn't score that many goals, nor does he create a whole bunch of chances for others. I know there are players (good players!) who are primarily "creative and/or goal-scoring" midfielders, or primarily defensive midfielders, but it's worrying to hear a player who apparently thinks he doesn't need to improve his all-round game. Sigh!

Nani has 8 in the lge. fuck me even nani is better SMH. don't overhype him. yes his shooting is head and shoulders above every other part of his game and yes he cant improve other parts of his game when he's on the bench so the solution? to send him out on loan for a full season to a club where he will start EVERY game cuz right now he's definitely not supposed to be starting for Manchester united. end of story.
