@Fred

I'd like to believe that if a young player impresses Ferguson, then he will get the nod ahead of Owen. I can't imagine him deliberately choosing Owen over Kiko or Danny if the latter two impressed him. And that's what worries me. I've had a soft spot for Kiko ever since that goal against Villa. But has he made any progress this year? We know Danny has.

@berbagod
i can see you are a massive berba lover
me too
welbeck is coming back fergie has said that
so rooney hernandez owen are certainaties in 25 squad
welbeck doesnt need to be included in 25 as he is under 21
so if we include berba its 5 strikers
kiko and diouf will be on loan or sold
i hope kiko goes on loan to suderland
our 25 man squad for next season
my prediction is
goalkeepers de gea amos lidergaard
defenders rio vida evra oshea evans smalling
midfielders anderson gibson carrick fletch cleverley giggs park nani valencia
strikers rooney hernandez owen berba
so thats 22 players i hve not included welbeck and da silva twins as they are under 21
so if berba is in the squad we can still buy 3 more players and if he is not there we can buy 4
also i think obertan will be sold and asley young will make it 23 players

But in all seriousness, his one league start last season proved that he is certainly no wage thief.

@Balaji

1) Yes, that's why it's a good deal for him alright! I'm sure Ricardo Fuller would rather play for Man United than Stoke - shall we sign him too?

2) This part is true.

3) The derby is the ONLY example of him doing this. He's certainly no Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, so let's not delude ourselves that he is.

@costas
mate kiko and danny dont need to included in 25 squad now
owen is given only 1 year extension
so if kiko goes on loan and impresses then fergie can replace owen with kiko for the season after next
i hope kiko goes o loan to sunderland

@Costas - Kiko was brought on as a late sub against Villa and scored a cracking goal. Owen was brought on against Bolton and scored a great header. So really, there's not much difference in terms of what they contributed to our season. Had Macheda been given the opportunites which Owen took to add to his tally (Scunthorpe, Southampton and Blackpool) I'm confident he could have done just as much as Owen did, and it would have been invaluable to his football education. Owen is the past (and not even OUR past!) Kiko is the future.

@kanchelskis

If you want to be petty (which clearly you do), the Bolton equaliser is the difference between seven points and nine, not eight points and nine.

If you don't want to be petty, answer this...

Imagine it had been 3-2, not 3-1, going into the last 5 minutes of the CL final. We have one sub left, and on the bench (hypothetical) are Owen, Berbatov, Welbeck, Diouf and Macheda.

Who do you bring on?

If the answer isn't Owen, you're lying.

If you can't support our player then shut your mouth.Calling owen a scouse twat and useless isnt correect.He has behaved like a class act here.You say owen will hinder the development of our youngsters.Ok did he hinder hernandez development?
Don;t talk something silly.Macheda is our future striker and will be out on loan so if you think macheda will be playing for us next season then you are wrong.
Both berba and owen will be useful for our success.Don't behave like a scouse fan.

Well played, fella.

What nodoby's pointed out is that Hernandez didn't pick up a single injury this season. We can't expect that to be the case this season, and Owen provides excellent cover as a finisher / mover off the ball, for when Hernandez is unavailable.

@kanchelskis - We WERE 3-1 down and we DIDN'T bring on Owen. That says it all. He's of no use to us for anything other than goals against the likes of Scunthorpe, Southampton and Blackpool.

For the record, I would bring on Berbatov in that scenario and no, I'm not lying!

@Ash - great, another year on loan for Macheda - then he will be sold next summer. Another Giuseppe Rossi story.

Do you seriously think macheda will be able to get his chance here even if owen gets injured or was not signed.The answer is NO.Macheda did a big mistake by joining a italian club rather than playing here.Sir alex will again loan him out and he will be ready in 2012 2013 season.
Sir alex isnt a fool to sign owen he must have thought something.Again if you don't like owen its your problem.You like him or not he is playing for us next season.

Can you read? I said 'Imagine it had been 3-2'.

And if you'd have brought on Berbatov... well then I guess that's why you're not United manager, eh?

How about the goal against City? How about a Champs League hattrick away from home? How about an equaliser in a cup final?

What, you want him to deliberately miss chances against Scunny, Southampton and Blackpool or something?

Give Michael Owen the chance and he'll quite often score.

He is happy with his super-sub role. Fergie is happy with it. I don't see what the problem is.

Super sub? He's scored about 2 goals as a sub - City and Bolton. Super sub FFS.

I think you mean Blackpool, Bolton, West Ham, Wigan, City actually.

But that's hardly the point. Here we have a vastly experienced striker, with a track record of keeping his calm and scoring important goals in high-pressure situations. We have this in conjunction with an unquestioning acceptance of his place as a squad member, not a regular player.

In this capacity, he provides not only a quality option as a substitute, but also cover for when Hernandez - the closest player to him in style - gets injured, which somehow didn't happen at all this season.

Fergie is wise enough not to compromise any youth development to give Owen game time, and I don't see what objections there could be to him sticking around in the squad.
