Interesting. It's probably one of the most crucial parts of our game. And it's also why Fergie's teams over the years have played great football.

@Jim and RedGem (and Scott): It would be great to have an article describing the technology used to monitor and measure players during training. I know that in rugby, players are constantly monitored during training. Not only heart monitors. They also wear GPS units. These allow coaches to monitor and record positioning, which can then be replayed later and discussed with players. They also allow coaches to measure speed, acceleration, deceleration, and speed of directional changes during match-like training conditions (as opposed to simply timing an individual running). Some rugby coaches actually want the devices to be worn during real matches -- apparently, they are small and basically flat, so even in a full contact sport like rugby, they pose no physical danger. I think that's going too far.

For those asking about the bra-looking things.

At Arsenal, we've had more injuries than any other club in the PL(stats prove it), possibly Europe, lately.

Gazidis decided we try GPS monitoring to try and predict when injuries will occur. For the first 6 months its useless b/c it is just used to gather information about the players, like their normal load excersion, etc. But then that info is used later on and if there are significant changes in the "load" then something might be wrong with the player. I'll post a link with all the info.

These, "training bras" as you call them, are mainly used in pre-season and in the beginning of the season (last season it was a belt worn around the chest underneath). They mainly monitor heart-rate (among another things of course), and are mostly used to measure fitness of the players during pre-season and track their progress to make sure they are "match-fit".

Berba has the best and quickest reaction of all. His thinking is sometimes too quick for the others to read

Sorry Misterq but I don't believe that. Eric the King had the best and fastest football brain I'd ever seen and he was an extremely effective linkman in the team. It's all well and good thinking "that would be a lovely flick if someone was running into that space" - what you have to think is "I know someone is making a run there so I will put the ball there". If you can do it with a lovely flick/backheel, great, but a simple pass will do it too - the important thing is the ball gets to your team-mate.

Personally, I'm still not decided on Berba - I don't buy that he doesn't care or isn't trying but I wonder if his lower paced style is suited to our counter-attacking style. One thing I won't buy though is that he's too quick or clever for the rest of the team though....

I think it has finally dawned on VDV that he won't get to play a lot of games with Real. Not sure that Fergie will be interested to be honest. Besides, I think we need a defensive midfielder more than an attacking one right now.

I wouldn't mind if we signed his wife though. :P

When u look at sniedje and robben when they was in maldrid, u will notice that vdv is better than them when the were in maldrid. But now the are better than him in their respective clubs. I can see the same thing that happen to wesly will surely happen to vdv if he leave maldrid. With the likes of kaka, khedia, canals, di maria, diarra and many more playing in that same position, vdv playing time will be limited. Hugo is injured, schools retireing next yr, carrick lost form (which i believe he will recover), signing vdv is not a bad idea. I hope fergie sign him.

Some news coming from Fergie's press conference:

-Evra should be ok for Sunday, but Rio won't be back until late September.

-Ando started football training yesterday, but Fergie said that he need to hone his enthusiasm.

-Bebe was our last piece of business this summer.

Hello Costas, are you ok mate? Yeah I have said all along I would prefer a defensive midfielder if anyone. I DO like Van Der Vaart but like you said Fergie has said nobody else to come in. We shall see.

Has Kenyon the cunt no shame? Fronting a bid for the dippers now!

"Hone his enthusiasm". What the fuck does that mean mate? He should be enthusiastic enough playing for United. He annoys me to be honest.

@KIng Eric

Good morning. I am good, thanks. How are you? The Anderson quote was that Ferguson had to hone Ando's enthusiasm. Don't know how Ferguson meant it exactly. Maybe Anderson is eager to start playing games again and Sir Alex wants him to work a bit more on his fitness first? It's not an easy injury to come back from.

I didn't hear the news about Kenyon. Wouldn't surprise me. He is officially in the hall of shame anyway.

I agree, I don't think Anderson's lacking enthusiasm. Sir Alex is probably referring to his youthful enthusiasm. A few on here have mentioned Ando running out of energy towards the end of matches, maybe it's something to do with that.

On Anderson SAF clearly means that Anderson is too eager to get back to playing. Its understandable as he was frustrated about the lack of football he was getting before the injury and now being out for 6 months he will be wanting to get back playing and prove himself.

The coaching/medical team need to reign him in though as so many players get injured pushing themselves too hard

@misterq ... one of berba's ex-colleagues from spurs once said of him that "he discovered a slice of time that we didn't know existed". Lovely quote, sums him up. I would have agreed with other comments that it hasn't really worked so far -- until this year. Based on what I've seen pre-season and in our two real matches so far this year, his interplay with other players is starting to work now. His interplay with Nani, Scholes and Hernandes has been excellent.

A fine example was Berba's goal against chelski. The lead-up play was suberb. I don't remember everyone who was involved, but the drivers were Berba and Nani. There's a whole passage where they're just dinking the ball around, out on the left side, teasin the chilski defence until eventually the defenders are drawn just slightly out of position ... and then, Berba sees the gap and Nani dinks the ball through to him.

I think that's a great example, not only of how he is interacting with others this year, but also shows how his more "patient" approach can be valuable. To those who say he doesn't suit our counter-attacking style: I see what you mean, but I don't think it was to be an either/or thing. With players like Rooney, Hernandes, Evra, Nani and Tony V, we'll never have a problem launching a lightning counter-strike. But that doesn't mean we can't have both -- we can. And Berba's ability to break down a defence that is set and in place is invaluable.

Stateside - Spot on mate. We cannot rely on counter attacking football every game. What about when the defence sits deep? Berbatov is perfect for these games as seen on Monday.

King Eric -- and there aren't many teams who can play it both ways -- the ability to counter-attack at blistering pace, and the ability to patiently pick apart a stubborn, deep defence. Most teams are set for one approach or the other. We can do both -- with the same players in the same match. That's valuable beyond belief. My only regret is that in Europe, where the patient approach would be extremely valuable, we tend to play a lone striker. I think that stems from our desire to play two wingers: if you have two wingers, and two strikers, that leaves only two in the middle, and against the top clubs in Europe (or the PL), that can be risky. And that's a pity. The only alternative would be to play a single winger who could switch between the two sides at whim, but I am not sure that would work either. Oh well!
