Jesus! Young's now started scoring, but we should still sell him!
Phil Jones looking really good, and Januzaj can only get even better.
Who else noticed the amount of time Rooney is spending in midfield these days, and even in his own penalty box? He doesn't want to be there, but is doing it for the time again.
I fear we will lose him and it will be our own fault. He wanted the dquad strengthening, and we did it by bringing in van persie and kagawa to directly compete for his position while leaving ourselves exposed in midfield and elsewhere

Oh, and FIRST!!!!

And Buttner looked like he was asleep for their goal, even jogging back to get a better view of their goal. He's got to go too. We have far too many players who are marginal at this point. Need to make room for one or two more of the youngsters

gazza, you completely destroyed your comment by bragging about being first. also rooney was at times playing up top with welbeck dropping deeper. he is in a free roam role so if he was near our penalty box it was cause he wanted to be.

got to say though, today it looked like moyes' united rather then SAF's united. vidic, carrick, rvp, and ferdinand arent necessarily as high up the pecking order as we should expect. not saying that they will be sold or wont play atall but our play today was extremely mobile with players that ran and ran to win the ball back and to get into space to receive a pass. if welbeck starts becoming a regular scorer i struggle to see how moyes can justify dropping him immediately for rvp. having jones, smalling and evans on the pitch at the same time allowed us to have a high defensive line and so many times you saw one of our centrebacks running towards the opposition box because jones could easily fill in at the back if we lose possession. this wouldnt be the same with vida or ferdinand. so moyes definitely has some very big decisions to make over the coming months.

cleverley, welbeck, rooney, rafael, januzaj, smalling, jones and evans all showed that they deserve to be on the starting line up from their performances today. evra was good and so was de gea

Rooney in a deeper position is better for us and him. He can influence the whole game, link defence and attack, and everyone who knows anything about football will give him the credit he deserves for doing so. He'll find more fame and likeability controlling games than scoring. Well, by the proper fans!

Well done players! Well done David Moyes! Also, points to note down are moaning of transition and unfair fixture list have suddenly disappeared. Training methods we all know are to be improved. Stoke away game under those challenging conditions was a very good win, though a COC match. However, I won't get big headed regarding tactics and style of play until the transfer window opens i.e. until after home fixture against Spurs. I took upto Everton match as a phase after victory against Arsenal only to be disappointed. We went from title challengers to top 4 fighters. So football is beautiful as things can change pretty fast esp ups and downs are going to be there in a long season which is 2 matches away from half season for us. Lets be honest, Sir Alex is not our manager anymore and 1 bad run can make even top 4 out of sight esp Everton and Liverpool form is too good. Plus it also depends on who spurs appoint as their next manager and how they, us and rest do their transfer dealings in jan. Having said that, if we win games upto against Spurs and don't get arrogant to underestimate cm signings in jan then we can make top 4 if we are really "back on track now". As for some players getting back on track, it is good for their confidence when we need them and they need us during their "true tests"...same goes to moyes as well. So imo "lets see till jan window closes" would be best summary atm...tbh ATLEAST to be where we are is a MUST for mufc with winable fixtures ahead.

@gazzer: Buttner's role in their goal was to play Cole onside. Apart from that, what else could he do; he was on the other side of the pitch?

@sir matt martin: I'd rather have Fabio than Buttner

@Dan Young: Fabio has to be better than Buttner

De Gea 7 - what's spanish for pipe and slippers ?
Evans 8 - combative, strong and made several key goal saving headers
Smalling 7 - see above
Evra 6 - quiet game but struggles because Adnan goes wandering
Rafael 8 - an absolute beast one of the most important players at the club
Jones 8 - out of position but excellent however he was under no pressure at all.
Cleverley 7 - good game, much better player when going forward
Janujaz 8 - stunning goal from a stunning player, beautiful dive too.
Valencia 8 - the left back will sleep tonight
Rooney 8 - moved West Ham around with his great passing
Wellbeck 9 - goal, assist, great linkup and all around play

----- SUBS ------
Young 7 - his all around game was average, great finish but he shouldn't be at the club
Buttner 5 - shocking position for their goal played Cole onside, so deep for no reason
Hernandez 7 - had little support the longer the game went on but scored a good "offside" goal

--- CONCLUSION ---
Finally three points at home and a decent passing performance too. Playing Jones in midfield is a mistake. Under no pressure all over the park today though which helps.

Please dont get carried away our manager has a mid table mentality. It's possible to shake this but ,,,,,,,,,,,, you know.

Not watched the game as it was missus' birthday but it certainly looks, and from the comments, sounds like a step in the right direction. I'll admit I have doubted Moyes at times but I think he's gonna come good. Today is the first time this season that I've had that feeling that this could be number 21. I know we''re a long way off the top, but after crimbo when Arsenal and Pool are out of legs, and Moyes' new boys have gelled into a Man Utd machine, I reckon we'll be up top.

Come on Moyesy!

No coincidence our best performances have generally come when we play with a proper link main rather than 2 out and out strikers. Either Kagawa playing there, or as we've been doing the last couple games, Rooney dropping very deep.

All three goals were outstanding. Could watch that first goal again and again. Link up between Rooney and Welbeck was like Yorke and Cole, the finish from Welbeck was brutal. Jones and Cleverley were excellent in midfield and credit to Young who scored a great goal and looked very lively.

Bit disappointed with the end product from Rafael and Valencia, crossing was all over the place BUT at least they were constantly looking to take players on.

Will be interesting to see how Moyes rotates over the next few games. Got a feeling Young will definitely start against Hull. Welbeck limped off so could see Kagawa come in. And maybe even Fletcher.

Quality goals all 3, well all 4 to be fair to the hammers.
Have to be pleased with our new found ability to score from open play. Fair to say it had left us for a long spell, now rediscovered.

Can't say enough about how well Welbeck and Young have come on in the last few games. Would have been 4 or 5 with better decisions and if Valencia could stop aiming for the gran in row Z.

Only negative to the match was watching the Hammers having their way with late tackles. Was Mike Jones completely out of his depth? Ravel should have been straight off for that first half clear our of Januzaj's legs.

Just hope Danny (Knee according to Moyes) and Evans (limped off) are OK.

Good times. 4 wins on the trot! Get in.

Graeme Souness when United lose: "They were terrible, really bad from United, their opponents deserved it."

Graeme Souness when United win: "United won, but their opponents were so so poor today"

Just a few weeks ago, Rooney pointed out on Twitter that souness said he should have been sent off for his kick out at Cardiff, and then later said that when Medel hit Fellaini in the face he was doing his job.

Also, Januzaj didn't dive in the penalty area today. He did dive when he expected a trailing leg to be left... all players do it and its embarrassing when its caught out but it happens week after week and nobody says shit unless its Ashley Young.. any other United player... or to be fair, Suarez.

Sick of Match of the Day.

Match of the Day is the flagship media outlet for the pro Liverpool and Arsenal Evil ABU Empire.

No other team will do for them.

Januzaj will learn to stop diving...... or, like Ronaldo, start learning to pick himself up when he realizes there was no contact. I don't really blame the ref today. From his perspective it might have been the second time he went to ground a bit easy.

matt martin - agreed. but i think its not a good idea to have a right footed left full back. moyes uses the fullbacks in a very advanced role and alot of the crosses depend on them (look at baines at everton last season) .. because of this fabio could only really get a start for united at right back (if rafael is injured), left wing (i'd rather we play zaha as a right winger if we were to try a new player there) or as a left winger .. and the left wing is for adnan januzaj for the next 15+ years. for that reason i dont see how fabio could be used more often.

one player i want to see played more often is zaha. i dont actually understand why im thinking this atall as i really rate valencia, but im starting to see what he dosnt offer us rather then what he does. we should not sell him anytime soon but he is actually quite a bit of a 1 trick pony. he does that trick to a world class level but when you see adnan at 18 you have to wonder what it would be like to have 2 wingers that can stretch play, run past a player with power and pace, play in the middle to get a goal, cover defensively and set up a team mate with an immense cross. seeing zahas progress since being coached by david moyes i can see him being a bit better defensively, but his defensive work is not up to premier league standard yet. we could easily concede 5-10 goals a season from him not tracking his runner properly. after a full season learning the united way i think he will be up to scratch so next season we could well see 2 youngsters running down our wings tearing teams apart. be great to see a very youthful team again. it has actually been a while

All our goals were great today albeit awful goalkeeping for the 1st , easily should of been stopped to be honest, Even Youngs banging them in now, they do say hes a confidence player, How did West Ham have 11 men on the field at the end? 2 or 3 should of went, Buttners defending for their goal was worse than anything we would see on a park on a sunday morning, Hopefully Galatasary will make that rumoured offer for him in Jan.

@Dan Young

You do realise Uniteds best ever left back was right footed and a natural right back who made his name playing left back right? The one and only Dennis Irwin, Fabio should be above Buttner in the pecking order!

I was just merely pointing out that right footed players can play left back and be very comfortable at it!

Dan Young December 22, 2013
tommy - yeah definitely. theres no doubt about that. but my point to matt was that under david moyes fullbacks are very advanced and have to actually create alot of chances mostly through crosses. because of this a right footed left back is not ideal and my opinion is that that is the only reason buttner is ahead of fabio

i also think we dont create nearly as much when rafael isnt on the pitch. he is a huge part of our creative play.

@Dan Young

Yea your probably rigght, Moyes probably only sticks left footed players on the left and vice vera with right footed players, and your certaintly right that we cross the ball more with Rafa at full back, thats because its natural to him where as when Jones or Smalling play their, they look completely out of shape when it comes to over lapping etc and neither Jones or Smalling are particular good at crossing
  • Log in to Reply
Dan Young December 22, 2013
exactly. also if you have right footed right backs and left footed left backs it allows you to have a left footed right winger and a right footed left winger meaning there are alot more attacking players that can find themselves in goalscoring positions.

i think fabio should be played at right back when rafael is out though. obviously against teams like stoke it can be a tactic to have more height at the back so smalling is picked but against the evertons and hull citys fabio should be the back up.

Valencia is such a frustrating player. Time and time again he ran past the full back but really couldn't finish anything. His crosses are either too high or, like they are 8/10 times, very low and hitting the first defender in the shin.

i think fabio was a Dm that was conveted to left back at best, i think that was were he was playing when we bought him from fluminese. Fábio began his football career as a defensive midfielder with his local club, Boa Esperança, but he was converted to left back when he joined Fluminense of Rio de Janeiro. With Fluminense, Fábio took part in the 2005 Nike Premier Cup in Hong Kong, where he was spotted by Manchester United scout Les Kershaw , who remarked that the twins reminded him of "two little whippets. Have you forgotten?

I liked Moyes answer when asked about Adnan's dive in the post match interview. He turned the question around and asked the reported why was he asking about the foul on Hernandez. That shows a change in his thinking. Turn defence into attack and defend your own.

I thought Smalling and Evans were massive at the back. All of the players look to have the bit between their teeth now.

Zanetti, lahm.. Several right footed players have excelled as left backs, the idea that only left footed players are effective there doesn't add up. Fabio is far better than buttner and fergie sent him on loan to gain more PL experience, he was pencilled in to replace evra. Is moyes that basic minded that he thinks only left footed players can play left back?. Buttner's inability is incredible, he geta out-done by the simplest of moves, the indonesia players in pre-season were running him ragged and has carried that on. He isn't good enough and fabio should be handed the opportunity.

Loads of players started in different positions, evra was once a striker.. Fabio may have played several roles.. What relevance does that have to do with anything? The brazillian settled and developed as a left NOT a defensive midfielder, his attributes are for the modern fullback, fabio can effectively and excellently play as a left back, that's where he mainly developed. His defending has got better and his attacking is even better than rafael as he is more composed. Absolutely no reason why you would go out and waste 20mill on baines when clearly, there's a ready made replacement for evra in the team and no such thing that a right footed fullback cannot play on the left, fabio is actually two footed so you could argue he could be an even better player. Moyes has not once given the brazilian an opportunity in that position, how can he know he can't play there. Secondly, is moyes that simple minded and inflexibile as a manager to assume complex tactics cannot work, I cannot believe what i'm reading.

Good points well made, Irwin our best ever left back was actually a right back who played left back for years, Unfortuntly Moyes must not rate Fabio, his contracts up in summer, I only see him leaving on free, Buttner is so poor at the back its unbelievable, the way he defended for West Hams goal would not be seen on a sunday park so shouldnt be see in professional football let alone at Old Trafford

Tommy - The mind boggling thing is, buttner seems to think he should be given more game time.. First and foremost for a defender is to defend but he seems to think charging up the pitch makes up for that.. He looks erratic and not composed, he looks like
He will concede a penalty every game, despite his speed and dynamism, he always seems a yard behind players, any sort of flair or tricks bamboozles him. He's not a premier league class footballer yet he wants to play for holland, a country that aspires to win the world cup. I hope he takes up that genoa offer and fast.

Regarding irwin.. I agree, no doubt it is possible for a right footed player to play there but thing is, fabio is actually two footed so he is even more effective. I just think evra's durability has been the reason why fabio has not cemented a place, rafael had things his way as united had gary neville (slowing and retiring) wesley brown (centre half and was out injured often) and john O'shea (utility man).

Buttner actually made the dutch premlinery squad for the last euros but was not selected in their final squad and the dutch had a horrible defence during the euros possibly the worst in the whole tournament yet he failed to make the final cut. I nearly fell off my seat when I read Galatasary want the "5million" rated defender haha if they offer 5 mill Iwill pay for his air fare myself!

Buttner is a poor defender. Good going forward but not disciplined enough at the back.
After Cole scored yesterday he was visibly affected. Maybe he knows he's a bit out of his depth.
Smalling was furious when he was running in after Cole gesturing at Buttner that he should have stepped up. The defence has been excellent the last few days. Impressed with Smalling at CB especially and Rafael adds a new dimension. He was really missed when he was out injured.

The amount of bile buttner is receiving here is incredible. I thought we do not slag off our own players? He made a mistake, so have every united defender. Remember Evans a few years ago, he was worse than buttner, yet he is arguably the first name on the team sheet when fit. Rafael also had a torrid time early on so anyone slagging of buttner is a hypocrite. I'd also like to add that since he's clearly bery attck minded, Moyes can do a bale and convert him into a left winger.
Re Fabio, the kid deserves a shot at left back.I also have to comment on this ridiculous left back crusade Moyes was on. He seemed to want evra out at all costs, I initially thought he just wanted to bring his best LB from everton but the last coentrao chase was eye opening. Evra is probably the most injury immune player on the planet, seriously, that guy is made from some durable material. I have seen him get hit or twist his leg in ways which normally mean the players season is over, but not Evra, he wobbles, gets up, limps a bit and he's back to 100%. I don't think LB's a priority, not until Fabio gets a decent run there.

What a load of nonesense... Who's slagging him off? People are stating the clear obvious of a fullback who isn't good enough yet wants more game time. Please don't compare him to jonny evans. Evans had enough loan spells and proved himself as a proper defender and when he returned, he was part of the defence that kept the longest run of clean sheets. Jonny can defend, buttner cannot and has not shown any indication he is capable of standing out at the level united play.

Rafael did NOT have a "torrid" time, he was a younger player (and still is) developing aspects of his game. Rafael has outstanding potential and in the games in which his errors may have been costly, you could see his positives and development. For example - rafael at 19 vs bayern munich. He completely outplayed and marked out ribery/robben but his inexperience and exubberance cost united. Rafael has always had the tools of a complete fullback, he just needed to curb certain parts of his game and find balance. Again, something never had when he was at vitesse arhem and still doesn't and in the long run, he won't as he isn't good enough.

Fabio is not a wide man even though he wouldn't look out of place but he is a fullback and i'm sure it is either that or he'll.leave united which is a massive shame

its time we give fabio a chance, why waste £18m or 20m on a 29 year old Baines. when fabio can do the job when Evra is been rested. I just hope fabio signs a new contrant. And Guys did u Notice David Moyes – Stuck with three in the middle and it paid off. He’s got the team passing the ball again and it’s no wonder we’re winning games again. Lovely to see him sticking with the youngsters at centre-back too. Hopefully more to come.

Tommy - Buttner's arrival at united was mind boggling, he.never stood out in the dutch league as a defender. Fabio perhaps should have stayed and waited for his chance rather than going off on.loan.. That has derailed him rather than push him forward. I just wonder if he had stayed as patrice's understudy and played more games, would moyes come in and just try to uproot him? Moyes' priority should be central midfield.

I agree.. I think moyes has got cleverley, jones and then rooney having a free role to drop into the central midfield when needed.. United are now able to control the central area.. I still think united need to get in quality central-midfielders but a change of tactics/formation can help.

I think it was predetermined that Fabio was going out on loan by Sir Alex, I remember the year before he was loaned out towards the end of the season he said next season Fabio will be getting a loan spell to help his development. Buttner was clearly brought it at the last minute as cover because they was no one else but I am like you thinking hes not good enough, I expect Fabio to leave on a free in the summer which is a shame really also could effect Rafa as well not having his brother around especially if Fabio moves abroaed. I like the look of Varela in the underr 21s, hes a rafa type fullback hope to see him progress to potential first team in the next couple of years!

That league table is dire to watch. That Spurs, with results so bad that the owner felt sacking the manager was the best course of action, is above us in the league really speaks for itself. If we are to have any chance of finishing top4 this year we need to go on a 7-8 game winning streak right now.

Tommy - Only if buttner knew that, he came into the club with the impression he is the definite heir to evra without even proving himself. It would be baffling if fabio was allowed to leave though, it may well affect rafael although he's quite matured now. United have a fair few fullbacks coming through so the club is very strong in that position. Saidy janko, varela, marnick vermijl (on loan) all have potential, that right area looks sorted.

i'd hardly call Moyes looking to sign Baines as a ridiculous crusade Baines made the top defenders in the world list and would vastly improve Utd's left hand side.It was widely reported Evra was moving back to Monaco last Summer and that rumor still persists and as much as i love him he's been a weak link defensively most of this season.

Yep Janko looks a cracking player especially going forward, strong lad who bulldossers past defenders at Under21/19 level. He was spotted at a blue stars tournament as one of the outstanding youth players in that tournament, signed on deadline day which went under the rader

Nothing to say baines is an upgrade on evra. Baines is near 30 and his prime so of course he may have the slight edge but at patrice's prime, he was the best left back.in european foorball. Baines cannot and will not match evra for talent or ability and for 20million, complete waste of money. Scout europe/globe and you will find better players who aren't inflated because they are ashley cole's understudy. Central.mid should be the priority.

@Samuel you are talkimg about a player who has barely had a sniff at LB, who came on as a sub and did not instantly sync with the fullbacks. That's his onlt mistake, Evan's came under a lot of criticism, he had a very good run of form at the start and alongside vidic and VDS was involved in the longest clean sheet run in Europe history but once he made the first mistake, it was like the floodgates had opened, he was abysmal, getting sent off, loosing defenders, own goal/deflections, lack of concentration etc.
I read a lot of comments on how Evans should never wear the red jersey etc, so don't try and pretend he was always a proper defender. Stop trying to rewrite blog history. Whatever happens with buttner, all I know is he has put in some good attacking performances and not soooo bad defensive acts.
