Excellent give-and-go for the goal. Fine strike, too, from Welbeck.

Josh King looks very, very impressive - how tall is he ?

Kiko Macheda needs to work harder.

Great teamwork between Owen and Welbeck, nice finish as well.

Macheda will be disappointed of not getting more minutes, too bad he had to go off because of Fabio's red card.

I agree with Joshua King, he looks very promising. I hope to see more of him.

Yes agree with the points above. It will be interesting to see who makes better progress - King or Macheda. King has burst onto the scene just like Kiko did when he first came. It will be about attitude and how determined they are to reach the highest level - King is only 17? Wow!

I feel Welbeck is more closer to the finish article I can genuinely see him making the first team as a regular - it would be great for us to actually produce a first team striker! He has so much composure for a kid - he looks like a little school kid!

kiko didnt have enough time to do much
but from the outside lookin in id say kiko has a big ego
and for a 17 year old nobody to the guy in 6 days who had a huge hand in united winning there 18th title is to be expected
i'd say he has picked up paul inces "im a big time charley" blah but he's only 18 now that will get knocked out of him of he will get be playing in italy before ya can say giggs into Maaaachedaaaaaaaaaa"

That is two at the Stretford End for him. Gibson will be even more jealous of him now. He has bags of quality and I think in the coming years he will become a part of the team. I want to see Rooney and Wellbeck together at some point in this competition. I think that combo in future years could be a real threat to most defenses. Both have pace, Wellbeck especially, and with Rooney's creativity it could be a great one two punch. Anyways that is a long way off but I am obviously pleased with the result.

I feel bad for Fabio as he was put in a tough position, sliped, and made a foul to save his team. The rest of the team stepped up and handled the game. United are showing some real grit and determination.

good goal by welbeck, but what is wrong with carrick he seems to be geting worse and seems in shock since the european cup final in my view we should have sold carrick in the summr. he also makes the younger midfielders like gibson and andeson seem like worser players.

At some point we'll have Rooney, Welbeck, Kiko, and Mame Biram Diouf. I wonder whether one of them will go, if one will turn out not to be United quality, or if SAF will be able to keep 4 top quality strikers happy.

tiny tears- what's giving you the big ego vibe from kiko?

Cav -- I saw somewhere that Fergie said Kiko and Danny both need to work harder. And I agree with GHTT, in his brief cameo tonight he just didn't look like he was busting his ass to impress. He wasn't involved enough for me. Its disappointing to see since I fell into the trap after his Villa heroics of thinking he is automatically going to be a world beater. Oh well. Maybe the rumors of him wanting to go back to Italy are true.

denton and gotta hate - Spot on about Macheda. I really can see King and Wellbeck progressing further and quicker from here on in. Was shouting and waving his arms around a fair bit at players tonight. Needs to get his head down, he ain't made it yet.

I really hope Welbeck makes the grade at United, a local lad and a striker, we havent seen one of them at United for donkeys years.

He had some nice touches, but then he had some bad touches. He didnt really show the pace has allegedly has, and he doesnt have a left foot.

Fuck me how serious do the bitters take this cup? Only change from Sunday was Zabaleta. The only trophy they have a chance of winning but they won't because our lads will retain it!

I don’t see how City can complain about our extra 6 minutes on Sunday when they were given an extra 30 last night to beat Fulham’s reserves!

Morning AIG and everyone else. I didn't catch the game yesterday. I am glad for Danny, but i have read comments that Kiko wasn't that good. I hope he is still on track to become a great player for us.

I am releived to hear about Hargo. Now lets wait and see how they assess his condition.

hi costas.good morning

neither did i but i considering we had a 2nd string side and were playing with 10 men for an hour it was a good result.a win is a win and some young lads got chance for the first time this season.actually kiko had just 30 mins so i guess we cant judge too much.

I will try to download the game later and see for myself. I was looking forward to seeing Kiko's progress this year. It's interesting that Nani and Carrick played this game, but i think they had to. They could use the match practice. Maybe in the next round of the League cup, a certain Owen Hargreaves might feature...

i feel hargo will play atleast 5-6 reserve games before featuring in a competitive game .Carrick is struggling for form and maybe thats why SAF used him yesterday.dont think he will start on Saturday.11 changes to the side that faced city clearly shows what SAF's priorities are and its definitely not retaining the Carling cup.

My side for saturday

Kusczak
o shea vidic evans/Ferdinand(?) Evra
Valencia scholes fletcher giggs
Rooney Berbatov

I am wondering what Fergie will have in mind for Saturday. It's a tough game in my opinion. He could rely on Scholes and Giggs' experience. But i think Ando will start. As far as the goalkeeper is concerned, i think he will give Ben another chance. I am also curious what will happen with Rio.

many people are saying rio looked rusty because he was not match fit but i think it was more to do with overconfidence .thats why he tried something silly and made that error.he is looking very rusty and needs to play a few reserve games.giggs can play 1 game a week and will be crucial again after his brilliant performance last week.scholesy too is looking great and deserves a start.Ando is looking good too and is showing signs of improvement.i think then Fergie may play Fletch on the right like Spurs and ando will get a start

Solid performance from Kuszszak, I think he will continue in goal against Stoke. In regards to the rest of the line up, We will need a bit of height in the team to deal with the threat of Stoke City in the air. So on that basis, O'Shea, Vidic, Evans, Fletcher, Carrick, Valencia and Berbatov will all play. Giggs to start from the bench along with Anderson and Scholes. Welbeck to make the Bench also.

aig - Hi mate. Agree entirely with Saturday's line up but would start Ben in goal again as he needs to get Sunday out of his system. Really hope the Ginger one starts, which I think he will with probably Fletch out on right and Ando in middle with him.

Anyone think Rio was in the squad last night as punishment for Sunday? Sir Alex probably said "if you think you are having the night off you can think again Rio after nearly blowing it for United on Sunday"!!!

Being the first game of the year for Kiko, I'm not upset about the performance. These guys will be flying in another month or so.

Holly hell Nani was speedy last night. He was constantly burning defenders with his pace and tricks. If he could figure out his crosses he'd be a star. I think he will. He's strong on the ball. I love to see a player confident on the ball that is willing to try a few tricks and dangles. Nani does that.
Kuszack didn't have much to do but his one save was sublime. And look, no stupid errors like Foster!! Weird. I didn't know it was possible for a keeper to last a game without a serious gaff(sic)

I dont think we can comment on Kiko for his performance that night, too little time to judge him. We should believe in him until something that obviously shows to judge. As with King, I think he's ok, not as good as Macheda who's of course more experience, but very promising :) And what can I say about Welbeck, I always rate him higher than Kiko even when Kiko scored the goal against Aston Villa. Welbeck has pace, technique and look more like a guy who's going to score some stunning goals. Oh, if someone noticed, he had a better goal celebration too :) probably because Sir Alex warned him the last time :)
