Whilst the rest of the team ran to celebrate with United hero, Edwin Van der Sar, following his penalty save against Nicolas Anelka, Cristiano Ronaldo fell to the ground in tears. If not for John Terry’s miss, Ronaldo’s tears would have been of sadness rather than joy, as he was our only player to miss a penalty after scoring the opening goal in the game.
Ahead of our match with Inter Milan, Ronaldo has reflected on just how great it felt to see Anelka’s penalty palmed away, knowing that United were now Champions of Europe.
“I always had a great ambition to win the Champions League, because it isn’t obtainable for every player,” said Ronaldo. “It was my first Champions League win, so the emotion was spectacular. I remember Edwin van der Sar saving Nicolas Anelka’s penalty and for me it was like the earth stood still, it was a really brilliant sensation. Sometimes we can’t control our emotions. It’s every player’s ambition to be a part of the Champions League, and they would all like to win it. I’ve had that privilege, and I hope to repeat that very soon.”
